Who do you think Jesus was?

I am curious that with so many people on the forum with clearly deep beliefs on religion (both for and against) that there is no discussion about Jesus and who he was. I believe he was the son of God but I am interested to hear other peoples views and where they get their ideas from.

Jesus didn't exist. I get my ideas from the fact that he walked on the water, multiplied wine and bread and resurrected, that and the fact that his mother is a virgin.

I think he was a very nice man who gets a lot of bad press (mostly from his followers). In order for him to have been the son of god, though, there would have to be a god.

He was an Italian: Ran around with a gang of 12 guys named Pete, Paulie, etc. Always feeding people.
He was a Jew: Lived at home for a long time, Mother thought he was god
He was a Puerto Rican: How many other peopel name their kids Jesus?
Who knows?

You know, there were plenty of people going around with fringe religions during the time of the Roman Empire. Jesus most likely did exist. But he wasn't as special as he's made out to be. He just another in the crowd, and didn't suffer nearly as much as I'm sure other Roman prisoners did.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Actually, I believe that His ideal system of governing in The Church (which was started in Acts, but broke down due to lack of faith in the membership) is more like communism.

Why do you think these ideas make him non existant?

What can anyone really know about jesus? The gospels were all written long after his death by people who never met him. Some parts contradict others.

The Quran has many stories about Jesus which differ from the versions in the Bible (e.g. he was not the Son of God nor did he ever claim to be but he was a prophet, chosen by God). However, I think it also says that Mary was a virgin and his birth was a miracle too.

Jesus was a Mexican.

1. His own name is Jesus, father is Joseph and mother Mary.
2. He was able to get booze from nowhere.
3. He never paid taxes.
4. He was kind with prostitutes.
5. He was baptized by a relative.
6. He always had a good explanation for everything.
7. He never had a dime in his pockets.
8. He used to get people together just to hear him talk.
9. He made a really big mess with just 12 other guys.
10. He was sentenced and the real crook let go.
11. He was tortured by his holders.
12. They thought he was dead but he came back on the third day.

I don't think that Jesus was the son of god.
It's more possible that the things attributed to him were done by different people and over the years credit was given to one person.

As time passed the event were exagerrated or editted to fit in with every thing else that was said, which allowed people to create a belief system based upon his exploits and teachings.

I think that Jesus almost certainly existed. My personal opinion is that he was a subversive cult leader, whom the Romans probably did the right thing in disposing of. My only problem with that is that they martyred him, and I now have to put up with people telling me he died for my sins. Pfft. He died because he was a lunatic and threat to Roman law and order.

That would explain the quote "If a man has no sword let him sell his garment and buy a sword."

I'd say Jesus existed. Don't know about the rest of the stuff. Walking on Water and Water-> wine seem a bit questionable to me. Who really knows though. Have fun.

Personally, it doesn't matter to me whether Jesus was the son of god or just some crazy guy.

What does matter to me is that he had many good messages about how people should treat one another.

Jesus was a Jew, he was also incredibly clever, fast on his feet, thoughtful, and charismatic.
Whatever else he may have been is beyond me to comment.

Now, Muhammad, he was a bloody genius. Creates a religion out of nowhere, gets thrown out of a city for it, raises an army and marches back to the city he was chucked out to take it over, and then his empire and cult expand all over the place. That guy had style.

Notice how Muhammad used violence to spread his made up religion, while Jesus used prophets to spread an existing religion. Christianity. Besides, if Muhammad was so good, why is 80% of America christian?

I dunno, why is Islam the fastest growing religion in the world?

Yes, see, I used the word "world." As in, "the place OUTSIDE of the US." I know, I know, it's a myth, right? No, it ACTUALLY EXISTS!

80% of america is christian.
Closer to 75%, and falling. There was an interesting study done from 1990 to 2001. http://www.gc.cuny.edu/studies/key_findings.htm. Just 15 years ago 86% of America was Christian.

Islam, Hinduism, and Wiccan are the fastest growing religions in America, as well as the large group "no religion".

Jews (by faith) and Protestants are actually decreasing in size. Mormons and Catholics are increasing, but not enough to keep up with general population increase.

Erm... the Christianization of America and Africa was anything but pacific. And there were a lot of wars in Europe and Asia over that too. They both are very bloodthirsty religions.
