What is happening to me?

I'm finding everything boring, I sleep for hours, I don't feel like eating, and I'm down in the dumps 24 hours a day.

I know I got depression, but it's getting so bad lately it's scaring me. I need to cheer up. if you know anything funny, please, post it here! I need happiness!

Go running.

seriously, its what I do. Running until you are shattered and then running some more is really therapeutic (unless you're really fat+unfit, in which case it will probably only heighten your depression when you make it 10 metres and fall over)

as far as amusing websites go, you're probably more of a comp geek than me so I probably can't come up with something you haven't already seen :( sorry.

You could be suffering from a form of clinical depression. I strongly recommend you see a doctor as soon as possible.

if you haven't already, you might want to go to a doctor to get a couple of physical possibilities checked out. you might have a thyroid problem, in particular...what you describe is exactly how i felt just before i found out i was hypothyroid, and they can correct that with meds in no time.

My diet is a healthy one. All my main meals contain a form of potato, a meat product, and a green vegetable. Physically I am very healthy, except for my astma.

Mentally I suffer major stress at work (I am a general assistant at Tescos), My Stepdad is an asshole, my mother is always worrying about me and i spend lots of time alone. i am also a single virgin.

There are major errors in my mental life, and i see no way of fixing them.

Well, if you truly want out of this depressive state, you really have only two options:

1. Do what your doctor tells you to,

2. Try pulling yourself out of it by a combination of exercise, vitamins, diet and meditation/positive attitude.

It's your choice.

My personal favorite funny site (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/toons/29/) (from the makers of badgerbadgerbadger).

And

some columns I've written (http://www.geocities.com/betty_guns/column.html). They aren't of the highest quality, but at least you can laugh at how dumb I am for writing them.

As far as doing things...I find that when I'm down I feel like I want to be lazy and sulk about whatever imaginary ills I'm suffering. But if I don't give into this, and dive into creating something (such as writing some music--also on my geocities site), it's pretty easy to forget that I'm supposed to be down. Anyway, I hope this helps. And know that you're appreciated here on Nationstates.

In case you have money stashed away. Travel somewhere. Ya dont have to travel to the other side of the globe, it can be just somewhere pretty near (but. preferably somewhere you've never been. )

Oh. and make sure it's somewhere where something nice/fun can be done. Dont travel to a tiny village where the only thing to do is sleep, eat, and sleep some more.

Find a new interest.. Do something ya have NEVER done before. Who knows. ya might think knitting is the most reviatlising thing there ever is (i dont think so, but you never know until you've tried, right? )

Maybe you should, if it gets any worse, seek a shrink? They can actually help people now and then!

Hope you'll get better soon!

Anyway, this might not be much help, but Ive watched National Geographic, and it was something about how food affects your mood. Oily fish and chocolates are the recommended mood enhancers.

They actually tested this in London's(or somewhere, I can't remember) nightlife district to reduce crime. They gave out Kitkats to passerbys at around 2 am, when the bars there usually close, and they reduced the crime level by 60% or so. Don't take any of my words though, since I don't wanna get really technical with some people here.

According to my personal experience, you won't be turned into a drugged zombie. Just tell the doctor that you don't want to be, and you get a lighter doze. First 3-4 days are difficult though.

Cool info. Rinkworks owns and can be pretty addictive too. I lost interest in it for the last time, though, when they kicked me off the chats for being too childish and irreverent.

Depression is some hard shit to face, but it passes eventually. I have no suggestions, except to find a good friend, some good pharmecutical drugs, and a healthy/harmless outlet for your various rampant emotions... and sooner or later, it'll disappear for some reason you can't fathom, and won't bother to figure out (since you're too happy not being depressed).
Ice cream is good too.

I'm not sure if my tips are that helpful, because there are different reasons behind depression, and its affects vary with age and background.

One thing I do when I'm depressed is expect too much of life. I want life to be happy moment after happy moment only occasionally interrupted by some form of hardship. In reality, life tends to be adversity after adversity, interspersed every once-in-a-while with a joyous event. When I recognize that it's normal for not every minute of my life to be easy or happy, it's a lot easier for me to function.

Seriously, man, I know it's been said before, but exercise is really good (gives you a natural high), and if you take it easy, it could help your asthma too. Tried swimming?

I heard that trying something new every day can help too. It doesn't have to be anything big, even just reading a different newspaper that day. It helps not to close yourself off and get too stuck in a routine. I know it's hard but try and force yourself into situations where you have to interact more with people, and get out of the house as much as possible.

These are tips that have helped me, close relatives and friends of mine:
1. Changing diet (a good glychemic index helps your mood a lot).
2. Trying new activites (it is not like you really do something anyway so start with something new), one of my firends got companionship, a useful skill and a really good time (which helped him out of his depression) by studying Quenya:
http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/qcourse.htm
3. I know that you may not like it but if you feel comfortable about it then by all means DO EXERCISE!
4. You said that you have trouble with your social life, try find a social activity which you like, try amateure theatre or role playing games for example (worked excellent for me as isolation was the root to my depression).
5. Have your physcologist told you if you have a clinical depression? If yes, then do as he says take the medicine, you feel good enough about life right now, but what says that you will do it in a year?
6. Check out:

If you have asthma then the best thing to do is moderate excercise, something that won't aggravate it. Most doctors would recommend a slow paced walk, golf, simple strength training routine, and/or flexibility training. Just getting your heart rate up 20 minutes 3 days a week will improve your health and your mood. Moderate excercise will also help strengthen your lungs and help with your asthma :).

Excercising w/ Asthma- http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/library/HQ/00275.html

Weather could also be a factor in feeling more depressed. Some people with severe depression can also suffer from SAD (I know, it sounds silly) which stands for "Seasonal Affective Disorder". If you aren't getting outside enough, your body could be needing more UV light. People in Alaska are often treated for SAD, using UV therapy. Which involves being exposed to UV lights for a certain amount of time, but only under the supervision of a physician. Late October and early November are when we start seeing an increase in depression among patients here. The weather becomes colder and increasingly more dreary and thus it affects all of the patients.

I would suggest that you go out and take a few brief walks, 3-4 times a week. Start eating less saturated fats ( I don't know if you already do) this would include butters and creams. Instead cook with olive oil, eat a handful of nuts/seeds, and slice avocado on salads (that way you're eating polyunsaturated fats). Eat more fish (salmon and mackerel are good) and low-fat dairy products. Mixes of pasta/rice and vegetables are also good sources of vitamins that help combat symptoms of depression.

And lastly....keep in contact with friends. Friends and family are often the key to helping people overcome depression :). With the holidays coming up, you *should* be spending a lot of time with family, and it might help out a lot!

(Sorry if this is long :) )

Hope you feel better soon!

That's not what it's like at all to take drugs for depression. As long as you only take the prescribed amount, and confer with your doctor (I'm guessing psychiatrist), they can really help. Some of the time, depression may be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, and drugs help this quite a bit.

Talk it over with your asthma doc as well as your family doc (if they are different). He may be able to help. I started feeling depressive several years ago, and my allergist changed my meds. I felt much better. Also, take Aerou's exercise advice.
And anger/grumpiness is a sign of depression. If it was a psychiatrist who wanted you on meds, and not a general physician, go back and talk over your concerns. It can't hurt to at least talk about it. (And if he doesn't want to talk over your concerns, find a new one.(
Ashmoria
18-11-2004, 19:03
you have been given alot of good advice, now follow it

get a thorough physical from your doctor make sure you tell him what meds youre taking now and let him know you arent interested in being a drugged out zombie (modern drugs for depression shouldnt leave you feeling drugged out)

take up a moderate exercise routine, esp that yoga thing

volunteer for something. homeless shelter, food bank, big brother program, helping others is a good way to get out of a funk

get an appointment at your local mental health center. (very reasonable fees, sliding scale) THEY KNOW STUFF. a good professional can help you coordinate all the above approaches until you find what works for you.

if you can only bring yourself to try ONE of these things, go to the mental health center first. they will help you get enough energy to do the rest.

Depression ... ah yes ... something I am intimately familiar with.

I, too, got much advice that basically amounted to "Oh just get over it".

Yes, because it is easy to "just get over" a chemical imbalance.

Go to your doctor again. Ask about Lexapro. It will not leave you a "drugged out zombie". Unfortunately, my depression is inherited, hence I will be on such medications for life. However, some forms of depression can be treated and even cured by 6-8 months of medicinal therapy.

I've been on Lexapro for a little over two years now and I still have emotions, I still feel, and my emotions do not run unchecked. I am a fully aware, fully functioning human being. Were I to stop the medication, I would revert to my old self. My old self was a distant, hermitted, slightly angry, rather weepy individual and that's not a good way to be when you have a family who needs you.

Always, and I mean always, exhaust the physical possibilities first. Excersize, sports, and diet changes may not be enough. While they are good advice for anyone - depressed or not - they rely on the problem being purely mental, when, in fact, a lot of the causes of depression are physical/hormonal.

Hope for you the best and let us know what you do.

Yeah, I suffer from the same thing.

Imperial Navy I'd definatly suggest getting treatment, because I am currently seeking treatment for my clinical depression. I know exactly what you're going through, because this is something I've lived with for a very long time, and it's gotten to the point know where I've now attempted suicide several times. I know now looking back just how absurd that was, but at the time things just seemed so overwhelming. There are too many people in my life that love me and care for me, and suicide is NEVER the answer, so that's why I'm seeking treatment.

If you ever need to talk, shoot me a TM and I'll send you my AIM. Just remember one very important fact, and NEVER forget it: No matter what, you are not alone.

I too suffer from clinical depression. I've attempted suicide three times in my life, the last time was a few months ago, and I ended up hospitalized. The worst thing about depression, I think, is that its self purpetuating. During down times, you neglect your responsibilities, or worse, become actively destructive. Your life becomes a bigger and bigger mess, giving you all the more reason to fall back into depression. My life is such a frickin mess....
A couple of months ago, I quit NS, I quit school, I quit my friends, and decided to fix myself. I went to a shrink, and he prescribed Wellbutrin. I'm not perfect now, and my lifes still a mess. Still, the meds help. I don't have depressive fits anymore. I wouldn't say I'm care free, but I have a clear head, and I'm taking a constructive, more positive approach to my own life. I think clinical depression is something that must be treated chemically. If you try to fight it yourself, you'll fail. In my experience anyway. Ahmmmm. AMF, have a kiss.

When I need a good laugh, I usually go to fanfiction.net and read some crazy fanfic about my favorite characters or things like that (look for the humor genre at the bottom of each fanfic name). Alternatively, there's megatokyo.com, the online webcomic that always cracks me up.

Humor is the best medicine to deal with depression.
