:) Desperate Housewives

Though I'm generally not offended by the naked female form, I was a little upset that this was shown before an NFL broadcast, as I had my five-year-old daughter in the room, and started looking around for the remote to switch the channel. I simply didn't expect to see a naked woman jumping a football player on Monday Night Football. Even a parental warning just before the opening would have been better. Couldn't believe they crossed this line after the big stink after the Superbowl.
Let us know what we're in for and we'll make the decision to censor for our children. I'm more upset that I had no warning on this one.of course you are rigth..
..then again its 2pm...do you know what your wife is watching at home?
do you know what all the "desperate housewives" watch in America (and other countries)...

My wife doesn't watch TV. Well, hardly anyway, and when she does, it's something the kids want to watch like "Dora" or "Blue's Clues".
But, then again, my wife is not a housewife ... nor is she desperate ... so it's all a moot point.
I don't know what other wives are doing. It's none of my business to peep into their lives.

Well, that has little to do with it. She never watched that sort of drivel before we had kids either. My wife is intelligent and requires, nay craves, intellectual stimulation. Hence, she reads books.
TV is the opiate of the masses and a waste of our time.

I prefer not to comment about what they mean with "Desperate" :D cos I m not sure.
But "Housewife"...is the wife that stays at home...I've observed what they watch...and I was pretty much "surprised"

It's not about Janet Jackson anymore. Though it was a stunt that they shouldn't have pulled.
Personally, I hope the FCC cracks down on the NFL.

So that they can tell us how to raise our children and what we should and shouldn't watch? Bullshit. I hope someone cracks down on the FCC. These are the same bastards that told us that we can't handle swear words in a war movie and that no matter how many people are slaughtered on TV, boobs will corrupt our youth much more.

You know this type of atitude really gets on my nerves some times there is nothing wrong with TV so long as you are as discriminating in your choice of shows as you are in your choice of books. Yes some TV is crap, unfortunantly with the current obsesion with reallity TV has probably changed this to the majority of prime time, but I have seen a lot of shows that are just as good as many books I have read.

Mmkay ... fair enough ... you now have the opportunity to prove it.
What books do you read and what TV do you watch?
Keep in mind that our book shelves are filled with Dostoyevski, Kafka, Kazantzakis, Burroughs, Cervantes, Idel, Crichton, and I have a deep love of Hemmingway ...
Name TV better than that.

Its funny he calls television the opiate of the masses, but admits he was watching Monday Night Football.
And how is that intro going to make you uncomfortable about watching it with your kids, but the scores of comemrcials with scantily clad women selling beer and now male enhancement treatments isn't a problem?

Law and Order is a better TV show than many books, as is Nip/Tuck, although it's more realistic to compare movies to books. Obviously the amount of detail and plot and character development put into an hour long show is not going to come close to rivaling a good five to seven hundred page novel.
However, if you chose books over TV, that's your choice and I have no problem with it. It's the arrogance that gets to me. Is there something wrong with enjoying a sport? Perhaps if more Americans did, there wouldn't be so many fat ones.
Personally, I play baseball and played football throughout grade and high school. In addition, I weight train, run, and find other ways to keep active. What problem do you have with this? If I choose to watch professionals play a sport that I once played and can relate to, I don't find how that makes me less of a person than you if you're reading a book during that time.

Just thougth I would toss out a little food for thought. Many countries in Europe have a much more relaxed attitude about public nudity, hence partial or full nude beaches and the like. These same countries also boast a much lower instance of sex based crimes. I wonder why that is? Perhaps we as a nation need to re-think our moral standards. It seems fairly obvious to me that purtinacial standards may well be the cause of many of our problems.

I have no problem with sports. I ran track in High School (100m and 400m especially), played basketball, and skateboarded as a hobby (still do!).
I have a problem with TV. Surely you admit that there is no physical benefit to be gained (unless we're talking about weight) by watching a sport on TV.
It doesn't make you less of a person and I never said it did. Don't be so defensive.

I'm willing to admit that most of those are not authors I have heard of, I'm not good at names and mainly read Sci-fi style stories, so books by people like Turtledove, Heinlein, Herbert, or Asimov. I also enjoy fantasy stories, Tolkin and jordan for example. As for TV shows I enjoy shows in the same vain like Star Trek, X-Files, and other genre shows. I'm also an advid watcher of the history chanel, well at least before I moved in to the dorms since it isn't among the basic channles we get. I also enjoy comedies, of either medium, such as Pratchet's Discworld seires or The Daily Show, because who can say no to a good laugh.

...and yet when done in moderation, there is little detriment from watching a sport, or anything else (barring reality tv) on television. Same with video games, and by gosh...the internet and other computer activities.

Two interesting ideas come to mind from this. One being that European drinking laws are more relaxed (aka...younger age) and the amount of deaths due to alcohol are lower than in the United States...where we won't let anyong legally taste the "devil's drink" until they're three years older than the draft age.
The second is the difference in morals between Americans and Europeans. Americans in general have few problems with seeing violence on television, but an angry mob arises at the sight of a boob, an ass, or a sex scene. Europeans on the other hand, seem to curb violence in television while being much more open with sex-relation issues.
Just interesting...nothing more...

Ah ... now The Daily Show ... that is something I never miss.
I will admit to being an avid fan of the following TV shows: The Daily Show, Futurama, Mail Call (history channel), Mythbusters (discovery channel), The Simpsons, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (my dirty little secret), and I never miss an Astros (Houston's baseball team) Game on TV if I can't make it to the game in person.
As for the authors I mentioned, give them a try. You may or may not like them. Writing is an art and, thus, is subjective. They are just my personal favorites. Go down to your library and ask about them.

I would never use the Internet! ;)
Which is kinda my point. I'm not a snooty bitch. I mean ... I'm sitting here in a T-shirt and jeans, barefoot, deer bone necklace, feathers in my hair, tattoos, blasting Primus on MP3, drinking a Dos Equis (beer, if you're unfamiliar with the brand), and answering threads in a mindless forum.
At the same time, though, I have two books open on my desk and am reading them. I have a copy of the Koran as translated by A.J. Arberry and a compilation of Tolstoy's short stories.
I grant you the right to vegitate all you want, just provide me the right to expand my mind as much as I want. All will be well with the world. :)
I have no problem with boobies on TV (or anywhewre else) and feel strongly we should see more. That said, however, a viewer should not be ambushed by them. There is a proper context and time for this. Family viewing shows are not it. Adult themed shows and late evening shows are fair game. But dropping it during a family show is like finding a Spongebob episode where he finds himself in Paris Hilton's bathtub - Great for grownups, but not so great to show on Nickelodeon!

I agree with you. Lets not let morality issues get in the way of a good time. If we all got naked willingly no one would be out committing crimes. Meet me at my house tonight and I'll get nude for you.

Nice in theory, but you have to be able to know what you will see before you can decide not to see it. The objection is not to boobies, but to boobie ambushes.

I would watch Desperate Housewives if I knew there would be some...

LOL, yeah boobs are very corrupting to youth (cough.)
Why don't you guys just be glad your kids are home watching tv rather than out doing drugs, drinking or killing someone. I say if you want to censor your kids, do it on your own networks.. But disney movies and leave TV to the people who don't care.
If my post offended anyone by all means.. Get over it :)
