Yeah, I just beat the game today, and I'm still in awe of it. Damn that ending, and how long until number three?
I'm not going to put any spoilers here, but if you're wondering what all the fuss is about... BUY this game, don't download it. Support Valve, and enjoy.
You know, I hope that the other person in the last room isn't toast after the boom.

I wish I could sit here right now scoffing at people who don't have this game but, alas, I am one of them. :(
I need a new processor before I get it (need one anyway), and so I might as well do the whole shabang and get a DVD-ROM (since I want the Collector's Edition; you get a T-shirt to show off :D) and some more RAM whilst I'm at it too... looks like HL² for Christmas for me.

it comes with a free new version of counterstirke.. Counter stike: scource isnt it? got the HL2 graphics engin as is supposed to be great :)
Download it from Steam, that way all your money goes to Valve and not to Vivendi who are suing them.

I'm just beat Ravenholm. And yes, both HL2 and CS:Source are quite amazing :). Frigging buy it if you haven't already.

how does it compare to doom3?

You really can't compare it to any other game, because that would be unfair to the other game. HL2 isn't just a shooter, or even a PC Game, it's a full experience, a cinematic quest.
You really like the characters, much more than in a normal game, even many full RPGs. Part of this can be contributed to the incredible story, but much is the result of the nuts-realistic character-work (esp the faces). The people looked, sounded, and acted like real people, and you actually cared. Kleiner was funny and kinda quirky (especially with Lamar, the pet alien), Barney was your buddy ("Hey, about that beer I owed ya..."), and the others were all great, but I'm not going to talk to ruin it.
When it ended, I was left sitting there, rivetted in my chair, jaw open. I was wondering "what the hell is this?" and actually thinking and hoping that other characters were safe, especially the one in the room with you when things go boom. Once again, the G-man is back in action (He ain't human, or even normal alien, because he can stop time on a whim.) and being creepy.
I cannot wait for HL3, even more than the original made me want HL2.
