What if Canada Legalized Pot?

Canada, as most canadians and, hopefully, some international people know, is steadily moving towards decriminalization of small amounts of canibis and many, myself included, advocate full legalization and regulation by the government. Pot is Canada's largest agricultural industry, worth an estimated 7 billion canadian dollars per year. What do other canadians feel about this issue? Do internationals agree or disagree with this concept? Would it change your perception of our country? Feel free to post whatever thoughts you have on this, but try to keep it relevent and civil. Would it be a good idea for Canadians to toke up on legal pot?

I don't see a problem with it, except that the US has threatened some as-yet-unnamed "consequences" if Canada does this. I can't imagine why, but frankly, I'm sure Canada would rather see the US lighten up before they do this and invite a bunch of dissatisfied yanks over the border.

What if we all legalized pot. What if we just legalized, taxed and regulated every drug. Wouldn't the world be a better place?

If Canada legalized pot, it would be a massive step in the right direction. It would be almost impossible for the US to maintain its current policies with regard to marijuana.

Poor americans. We're already taking over their entertainment industry, their drug industry is falling into our hands, soon they will have nothing left.

You better start learning to say "Eh" and "Aboot."

Growing up across from Sarnia, Ontario and having access to the CBC, I am quite confident that American television will remain firmly entrenched on our shores. Keep your TV, but thank you very much for Michael Sheas and Steve Yzerman. ;)

Personally, I do not believe in the legalisation of those kinds of drugs, but it would be funny to see, just to laugh at the Americans as they choke, splutter, harrumph and turn red with outrage. :p

I thought they already did or just frown (litterally) at the pot smokers. Last time I was up in BC, a guy walked by me on the sidewalk smoking a joint. I think it was boxer day and plenty of people shopping away.

This American would look forward to the choking and sputtering of politicians of every political stripe.

What if Canada Legalized Pot?

...there would be lots more stoned Canadians... is that a good thing, or would it mean the end of humanity? I lean towards the latter if Jim Carrey is anything to go by.

I support this. It would make me respect your country even more than I already do.

It probably would. Governments and prisons would be smaller.

Would the Americans really get that angry? Aren't almost all of the states that border Canada liberal anyway?

Americans wouldn't get angry, politicians would. Some of the states that border Canada (particularly the Northeast) are Democratic, but that doesn't mean that they would bless decriminalization in Canada. In fact, former Democratic Speaker of the House Tip O'Neil got the ball rolling in earnest when it came to the Drug War.

Hate to break it to you, but Canada is NOT moving to legalize pot. It is moving to decriminalize it.

And yes, there is a difference.

All the discussion centers around is making possession of small amounts of canabis subject to a fine rather than a criminal record.

Growing it, selling it, importing it, exporting it, possession of large amounts, etc will still result in a criminal charge.

All this does is reduce court workload for what is now perceived to be a minor infraction, and also to not limit the futures of young people who might otherwise wind up with a criminal record for smoking a reefer.

As to the US attempting to put sanctions against us - well that would a tough thing to do under the limited changes currently being considered.

I can imagine the Canadian entry forms:

"Purpose of visit:

Buisness
Pleasure
Smoke Pot"

Hey, it worked for the Dutch, why shouldn't it work for the Canadians?

I think eventually all of Europe and Canada will have fully legalized, regulated, and taxed pot within the next 50 years. America, on the other hand...

*sigh*

I do like my country, but at times I wonder when it's gonna catch up with the rest of the world.

I have to disagree on one thing: Pot is not Canada's largest agricultural industry. Far from it.

Actually, if you read this weeks Maclean's, you'll see that pot is worth 7 billion dollars in sales per year. The only one that approaches it is beef, and that is only worth about 5 billion (Canadian dollars)

Yes, our government is only moving towards decriminalization, but as a society, we are starting to lean towards legalization and regulation.
