Why the US is better than the EU.
Andaluciae

The answer really is simple, and I'm surprised no one has come across it yet.
We've been off barking up random, ineffectual trees really. We keep arguing about social policy, foreign policy and economic policy. How the EU has healthcare for it's citizens, how the US has lower taxes and unemployment. All this stuff evens out to zilch.
We've also heard all sorts of reasons involving history. Tales of American's roaring down the streets of liberated Paris to rub out even more Germans during WWII, and tales of French officers and equipment being vital to the American efforts during the American Revolution and WWI.
These are all fine and dandy, but in reality the true reason is simple: Cola variety. During my trip to Europe I seemed to only see Coca-Cola products. No Pepsi products at all. Now this would be tolerable if it weren't for the fact that I could only find five different varieties of cola. I came across coke, diet coke, Fanta, Mezzo Mix and some sort of other drink. I never ever saw anything else. Hell, my Uni offers only coke products, but there are nearly 15 different types of coke products available. I can get sprite, or fanta, or mello yellow or whatever. But in Europe I invariable only found those five products.
So, here is the conclusive argument about why the US is better than Europe!

There was a nice brewery that only did about 5000 bottles a year, never tasted such a good beer from a micro brewery before. It was somewhere near sunday river. Thing is, there are some real nice beers over in the US, just that the big corps (like Interbrew etc etc) just buy them out and shut em down to cut out the competition, which sucks really. :(

Come to England, go North. Stop just before you get to Scotland.
Newcastle! Go into a chip shop and ask for a chip stottie with salt and vinigar and a splash of curry sauce! Go outside, eat with fingers, use paper to wipe curry sauce off the front of expensive clothes. Enter nearest pub and ask for a bottle of dog, repeat this step until you feel hungry again, leave the pub and go back to said chip shop and buy a Donner Kebab with either chilli sauce or garlic sauce. Go home. Wake up and after saying sorry to every one you met before going to be start again from step one.
travel North again, miss Edinburgh and go to Glasgow. Go to chip shop and order haggis and chips and ask them to go light on the salt! Find pub etc..

Budvar is good, but there are many better beers to be had in Prague. Last time I was there (almost 3 years ago), I drank 5 litres a DAY, usually a different beer every half litre. (That's about a 22oz'er for those non-conversant in the metric system). For 5 days. Didn't gain an ounce. (Might have been all the walking, but hey...)
I'm Slovak, and I love going back to the former Czechoslovakia. Literally every town of ten thousand has their own brewery.

You're fairly close. If you drink it once, you're never allowed to drink it again because you're no longer a 'Virgin Cola virgin' and it's only for 'Virgin Cola virgins'... um... yeah, that's right. Get a life. This is old already, but every one is allowed a rant no matter how bizzare and dillusional it may appear to be?
First are you sure you were in the EU? I know how certain people are incapable of reading a political map.
Second, if in fact it was an EU country was it a new member. New states, while fantastic countries are a wee bit backwards.
Thirdly, Pepsi is only nice in the US. Coke is horrible in the US but far nicer in Europe. I have been to most of the countries with in the original 15 member states of the EU and the same applied.
But to base an arguement and a very weak one at that on the availability of mineral drinks is a very very very sad day for Americans. Several of your fellow countrymen/women/elves have been complaining about threads posted re the intelligence of American citizens and how enlosed they are in their own country and you have just gone off and destroyed that.

Bah, who cares about America? It's all about CANADA!
I mean really: Good prices (except on cigarettes), good products, free healthcare, a moderate tax between the UK and America, cheap schooling, a decent education system, and a good standard of living. Not to mention great beer! American beer is like water, but Canadian beer is like moonshine.
Of course we have an idiot parliament that never gets anything done. But our dollar, slowly but surely, is gonna overtake the Americans. Get in while you can!

As someone not from Europe or USA - general rule is:
If you want fizzy drink, buy American.
A similar rule is:
If you want a beer, drink your own urine before buying American.
There actually are good american made beers - just not the mass-produced mass-marketed ones (eg. bud, miller, coors...) which suck.
Try some of our tasty micro brews if you're ever in the States.
Some good micro breweries (IMHO):
Magic Hat: a small brewing co. from Vermont. Tasty, tasty beers. There's #9 (the standard ale), Humble Patience (an irish red), Blind Faith (pale ale) and others. Sadly, my favorite - the Pollenator - was not brewed this year
Long Trail Ales: another Vermont brewer. My favorite: the Hibernator, a winter ale, a bit on the dark side but lighter than a porter, with a hint of honey flavor.
Flying Dog litter of Ales: a colorado brewery. With funky names like Tire Biter, Leg-lifter lager, and In Heat Wheat. The beers are as tasty as their names are wacky.
Flying Fish: a brewer from New Jersey. My favorite brew: the Abbey Dubbel, brewed in the trappiste style. Quite delicious.
Foggy Bottom: a DC brewery. Their standard ale is quite nice...and when you're in DC it's CHEAP!
These are just some highlights...there are hundreds of other micro-breweries out there (liberty, catamount, old dominion, victory, yards, etc. etc.)
Yuengling Brewery, the maker of a mighty fine lager beer, used to be a micro-brew but are now the 5th largest beer maker in the US. It's the only mass market beer I will drink, as it is the only good one; and I was drinking it before the nationwide expansion.
Oh - one last thing - I'm not a US made beer only kinda person. I am also a huge fan of belgian and german beers, esp. hefewizens and dubelbocks. Yum, yum!
Now, if you want to talk about wines made in the states - which is a whole other topic that I won't go into now - I'll have to say that 95% of it is crap. Damned california...spreading swill around the world the way mosquitos spread west nile...

Off the top of my head, I can think of Virgin Records (of which Virgin Megastores may be part of, otherwise add Virgin's line of stores to the list), Virgin airlines, trains (they still do those? I value my life so I stay away from the British rail system), hot air balloons (they still do those too?), mobile phones, internet, cars (they don't make them, they sell used and pre-registered cars)... I'm probably missing a few. And yeah, they go into space now too. They're pretty diverse, really :D.

Ignorance is bliss it seems. Who needs Coca if you can buy Fernandes at your local store? It's Surinamese, it's cola, it's flavored and above all: it rules!

As a Brit who's spent some time there, I can confidently say the U.S. does have one really decent beer - Sam Adams !
A fine, hoppy beer... bloody great :)
Of all the national beer chains Sam Adams is the best, but on a local scale there is a pretty strong group of microbreweries. Often times these can be found in the midwest, and almost universally family businesses run by the descendants of immigrants.
In the US regional varieties are key. You'll find an awful lot of German type beers in the midwest (where you'll also find the great profaners of beer, but hey), whist in the east you tend to find a more English/Irish type. No one has any idea what they drink in Cali though.
Homebrewers also aid in the quality of American beer.
Even if I'm not supposed to drink it yet...

Personally I think we should consider a wholsale renaming of all Western Countries. How about this for starters:
USA: "We're Number One, Neh Neh Neh Neh Neh Neh"
UK, Canada and Australia: "No, we're not just like "We're Number One, Neh Neh Neh Neh Neh Neh""
New Zealand: "No, we're not just like "No, we're not just like "We're Number One, Neh Neh Neh Neh Neh Neh"""
France: "Up Yours Rosbif"
Germany:"Look, We're Sorry, OK?"
Italy: "Berlusconiville"
Spain: "We're Big Too"

To go back to the black-pudding debate, in Sweden it is made out ale, pig's blood and oat, all mixed together to a pudding and then fried. After a few minuts it is black and ready to eat with lingon-berry jam (I know how it sounds, but I just can't resist it!)!

Everyone knows that Julmust and Pommac own Cola (at least in Sweden), so why bother?
What I know "Europe" is not one country with one law, and thus ages for drinking vary. Here it is at 18, although the socials estimated in a research that at least 60% first drink at 13.

Californian red ink in a tetrabrik?
Or verry cheap EU ink?, I never drink bad wine, wetther it is Italian, Californian, Oregon (great Pinot noir), German, Austrian, Hungary (Tokaji) or another region.
Just a question of knowlidge and following the wine actuality (RVF, Hachette, Parker aso.) Takes a while but since it is a hobby, I like to be with my nose in those magazines and by those wines.

I know one of the really bad one's was from somewhere in Northern France.
Being an 18 year old yank and my total alcohol experience at the time being a few cheap (and disgusting) beers at parties, though, I had no knowledge of wines, but I found that I loved most white wines. I like it when wines are somewhat sweet. (and no, unlike most crazy underage (in the US) americans I didn't get drunk while in Europe, the drink was too good to overdo!)
But you Europeans can claim to have made it impossible for me to ever drink cheap beer ever again. I was so spoiled by the German beer, that I tasted a Natty light recently, and I sputtered.
Just my deluded opinion.

But there are a goodly number of American micro-breweries. And the beer they make is highly similar to some European beers, chiefly because they are run by immigrants, or the descendants thereof.
