The l33tspeak dictionary

Chicken pi

This is an attempt to alleviate some of the confusion about
l33tspeak. I'n not an expert on it myself, so feel free to
post words or phrases that I missed.
Quite a lot of this is from other posts, so thank you Tirest, Emobuddy, Takuma and FMP. Also, I copied a lot of it from a BBC article.

A = 4 , /-\ ,/\, @
B = 8, 6, |3, |>
C = [, ¢, <, (
D = |) , <|, P , b, o|, [)
E = 3 , {, &
F = |=
G = 9, 6
H = |-|, #, [-], {-}, ]~[, }{
I = 1 , !, | (also spelled "3y3")
J = ) ,|, _|, ;
K = |<, |{, ]{, }<
L = | , |_ , # , 1
M = //., ^^, |V|, [V], {V}, |\/|, /\/\, (u), n\
N = //, ^/, |\|, /\/, [\], <\>, {\}, |v
O = 0, ()
P = |^, |*, |o, |>, |", |?, /=
Q = O\, 9, (,), <|, ¶
R = |2, 2 , P\
S = 5 , $, Z
T = 7, +, -|-, 1
U = (_), |_|
V = \/, <
W = \/\/, '//, \^/, (n), \v/, \o/
X = >< , `/.
Y = % \o| , j, '/, V/, \-/, ¥ (alt+0165)
Z = 2 `<, ~\_, ~/_, z

here are some l33t abbreviations, words and phrases:

1337: leet, or elite to most of us, to the leet, it's just 1337
lol = laughing out loud
rofl = rolling on the floor laughing
lmao = laughing my ass off
rolfmao = rolling on the floor laughing my ass off
wtf? = what the f**k?
omg! = oh my god!
btw = by the way
n00b = someone who is new to something. Can also mean someone
who is crap. For example, in an online game someone who keeps
teamkilling is acting like a n00b.
3%3: I (eye)
fu><0rz, su><0rz, etc: x or >< replaces "ck". So for example "su><0r" means "sucker".
1337 H4><0Rz: leet hackers, one who is cool in the 1337 world
pr0n: porn
w00t: Derived from 'hoot', this is defined as 'yay', it can be used, for example, upon victory or, possibly, the release and procurement of a new video card.
ph33r - Fear, most commonly used in such phrases as, 'Ph33r m3!' or 'Ph33r |\/|y 1337 sk1llz!' It can also be written as, 'ph34r'.
0w|\| or 0wn3d - One of the most popular l33t words it is very loosely defined as beaten or can simply be an expression of awe, for example, 'I 0wn3d you' means 'I have beaten you in a very humiliating fashion', or '0wn4ge!' which means 'That was (or is) very nifty'. This word is commonly mispelled as "pwned"
13wt - Treasure, good merchandise, possessions, a misspelling of loot. Most commonly referring to pirated software, items in a game or promotional giveaways.
f00 - Fool, one who isn't very bright or skillful.
j0 - Yo, as in the greeting.
d00d - Dude; an expression of comrade, or just used to address a random person online.
l4m3r - Lamer, someone who is lame, someone who uses an unfair tactic or generally makes the things around him or her less fun.

The syllable "ate" is replaced with the number 8. "er" tends to be replaced with 3r or 0r. "ck" (as in hacker, sucker, etc) is almost always replaced by x or a random collection of symbols meant to represent the letter x.

Some anime fans use Japanese words as well. Some commonly used ones are:
Baka (or "84|<4") = idiot
kawai (or "|<4\o/41") = cute

I've been meaning to include a l33tspeak history section in this, which I'll do when I find the time and motivation to do so. Check back in a few decades.

http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=7487374&postcount=38

The original post also includes a couple sentences as examples of l33t usage. L33t is fairly variable, and a even "l33t" might be spelled a number of different ways: l33t, l337, 1337, etc. If you look at it long enough, you can eventually read it pretty well... unless people start doing bizarre things like using # for L.

Do you think that I should include phrases like "flaming" or "trolling"? I'm not sure if they count as l33tspeak, but it might be useful for people who don't know what they mean.

There are others, but these are what you'll need to survive around a bunch of nerds using instant messaging during a multiplayer online game.

"8" for "ate", "lol", etc. are not true 1337... they're crappy AIM looser terms, with the "8" coming from the abnoxious "sk8rs" or whatever they want to be called.

Plus, the Standard 1337 Alphabet (developed by myself and several friends to reduce ambiguity.

-0rz, -3r are common in 1337. -0rz is for adjectives/plural nouns. Japanese words are only used by the Anime freaks (like me ^.^) and are not a part of true 1337.

1337 is regional, there are about a million forms of it. You can do a thread a mile long on it, and never agree on ONE single alphabet. But there are commons. It's like chinese and all of its dialects. I count it as a second language on applications. :P w00t

I fully agree. If people want to use Japanese, don't just use a few phrases that you learn from anime. Which I would be doing if my Japanese teacher didn't move to Italy... In response to the latter point, I wouldn't be surprised.

I first logged onto a dial-up BBS in Houston, TX in the summer of 1988. It was a Renegade BBS called "Fresh Cheese". People were using ALT codes to make letters and replacing them in common usage on the message boards. (If you don't know what ALT codes are, you're a n00b and you are teh suck)

After about 2 years, this became known as "hax0r", which ya'll are now calling "1337 speak". It's not new. It's old, tired, hasn't changed in 14 years, and really needs to die.

For you n00bs out there, please stop stealing the previous generations' ideas and claiming them as your own, fresh, new stuff.

...you can eventually read it pretty well... unless people start doing bizarre things like using # for L.I reckon I know why that is. Here in the UK we have the currency symbol '£' for pounds, the Latin for Pound being 'Libra', and hence a stylised 'L' being used for Pounds and other currencies such as the Italian Lira (of the same root, no doubt, though that has been recently exchanged for the euro).

Traditionally (in days before unicode and/or proper font/localisation methods were widely used) when the '£' symbol was converted to US-ASCII (for example on contemporary dot-matrix printers with dip-switches not set to UK settings) this comes out as '#', sometimes known as 'pound', but also hash, octohorn, square, gate, etc, etc. And hence the link between 'L' and '#' might have been established. (And before you ask, native UK computers, like the BBC/Acorn, always had #s as well, way back to the 70s, at least, but I can't remember the exact ASCII differences.)

(Even today, '#' might be seen in the place of '£' on a garage's multi-sheet servicing invoice or similar, probably due to old-but-still-usable technology in such an environment, so we generally understand what it means when we see #1.23 or #5,123.00 in an appropriately price-related location on such a form.)

Mainly l33t sp33k and gaming lingo are two differnt things. One, is to make yourself look cool?? The other is used for ease of use, and speed, when you have to get somthing out quick.

'Nub/n00b/noob' is pretty much the ultimate insult, its to the gaming community what '******' is to the black community. Used by friends, its funny, by enemies, or people you dont know, an insult.

'Pwned', is completly owned/beat the peson killed/beat had no chance, has no skill, and is being made fun of. It orginated from a warcraft 2 mulitplayer map, I think, when you died, instead of say XXXX was owned, the maker misspelt it, and it said pwned. It stuck.

'Teh' is an intentional misspelling of the, simply beacause of how easy it is to switch the letters anyway.

'We are own your base' This is used in a CTF/base capturing game, it came from a really bad translation of a nintendo game, I dont remember which one though.

'8' replacing the 'ate' sound, is simply for speed. "I h8 u" etc..

'j00' is you, not sure where that came from, maybe just trying to make it sound slurred, as if you were drunk.

'u' replacing you, once again, speed

'3' replacing e, usually, just trying to look cool.

'0' replacing o

'z' replacing s

'x' replacing ck, k, c

'lol' laugh out loud, a way of conveying emotion in an otherwise emotionless enviroment.

'rofl' roll of floor laughing, a way of saying somthing was hella funny

'roflmao' roll on floor laughing my ass of, saying somthing was really, really funny.

'pi3, b33r' Pie, and beer, the two main food groups.... people will use these now and then.

'omg' Oh my god

'hax0r' Hacker/hacked usually used by the 'pwned' 'noob' in explaining why he lost; 'OMG WTF j00 HAX0R!!!!!!'

And remember, most gamers, dont use most of these, in fact, most gamers despise those that do. I guess it sorta depends on what game your playing, whether you will here these used or not.

'Prawn3d j00 n300bl3z3r', somthing my friend said once as a joke, making fun of 'l33t' gamers, a few people use it now, its so stupid its sorta funny.

'prawn' making fun of how stupid 'pwn' is
'n3b00b' making fun of how stupid n00b is.

Just add a bunch of z's and 0's and 3's to what you say, and you can be l33t too!

Well, a few things, I like to say there are three general types of l337:

0ld l337: just using numbers, no symbols.
M0d3r|\| |_337: numbers and a few obvious symbols
|\|3\/\/ |337: every letter has its own leet version. t3h v3ry c0nfuzzl1ng.

Also, "the" is usually "teh" or "t3h".

Furthermore, my friend has a "l337 filter" on his website: link (http://qc.fengyuan.com/?p=progs/browser&s=&f=) (note that not all websites actually work. Try "http://www.msn.com/" with filter "leet" It's really funny.)

Nationstates dowsn't work, because it has too many frames and javascript, but if you can single out a frame you can get your nation's description in 0ld l337: L1nxx0r 70 m1n3 (http://qc.fengyuan.com/php/bscript.php?s=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nationstates.net%2Fcgi-bin%2Findex.cgi%2Fpage%3Ddisplay_nation%2Fnation%3Dzecro&css=&js=&custom=&filter=leet)

Mainly l33t sp33k and gaming lingo are two differnt things. One, is to make yourself look cool?? The other is used for ease of use, and speed, when you have to get somthing out quick.I personally don't hang around in environments where 1337 is (00|_, but all the best for those who do.

As for speed, I never had any trouble reading the stuff, but it is so difficult to write properly. Genuine-looking 1337 is just so hard to construct properly. I mean, I know enough about character replacement, and I can usually suppress my reflexes to type correctly when it comes to transposition of letters (e.g. "teh", though I tend to write "more" as "mroe" anyway, thanks to my particular style of free-form semi-touch-typing) but I reckon that writing in 1337 probably takes at least three times as long (if not more) as writing the original text.

I tried a little test.

"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." Tried it a few times, took between 6 and 8 seconds (the upper end being when I accidentally looked down at the keyboard and mis-keyed... :)).

"T3h 0,u1(|< 8R0\/\/|\| |=0>< _|u|\/|P$ 0\/3R 73h |_4z'/ |)0(=" Best part of a minute, and is an awful mix of the various forms.

I seem to do much better when converting to upside-down 1337.
L337 |\|M0(|-3(|!$dn 0f 6|\|!L`d3A|\|0) |\|34M `d3LL38 4)nW 0(| 0L W33$ |

:)

(BTW, I'm not saying that 'proper' 1447ers can't type the stuff in fast, just that I can't. I just hope none of them are incapable of using English (in ordinary situations) at the expense of that skill... I'm almost certain most of them can, but when you hear about essays in school being written, these days, with txtspk spelling in them, you've got to wonder... :))
