A laser with a diameter of a basketball whichs reaches hundreds of kilometers away.Well, we will probably see these things installed in select planes for select carriers if the rest goes well.

Wow, California labs actually doing something useful... I don't believe it.

Ah yes, another sucessful test.... where they know where the missile was launched, what type of missile it is, what its velocity is, where it is headed, etc. And only one test at that.

Call me a skeptic, but that is not confidence inspiring.

Actually with the ICBM threats of tomorrow we probably will know all of those things as well. China only has ten ICBMs, and there are a very few places they'd even consider using those against. We know virtually everything about the type of missile the Chinese have, it is an old missile, and the data about it can be gotten from the web. We know where their silos are, so it would be reasonable to assume that we could handle those.

North Korea might have a missile that can reach Cal. sometime in the next ten years. With that there are even fewer targets than what the chinese options have. With the NK missile it would be a very very basic missile. It would have very few decoys, and we'd be able to track it for it's flight to it's destruction.

I have to say, about time boys, about time!

I agree. With the systems countries have in place at the moment, every country knows exactly when, where, what type of missile, everything, but have nothing to stop it. if this laser works then i say put it into use asap.

Yet another step to the US power in space. I also read an article that the Air Force has a new thing that jams other satalites. I think its a cool concept, but Satalites can be shot down instead lol.

Looks like the US is safe untill a countermeasure are developed. I give it 3 months. But then again, I know nothing.

Satelites don't need to be shot down. Just set off a nuclear weapon in LEO. The resulting radiation and EMP will take out every satelite in orbit in a fairly short period of time.

But that would also take out our satalites. Thats why its better to shoot them down. Or maybe jam them all, and then shoot them down one by one.

That's another good use for the laser! :mp5:

I read on cnn.com that in addition to the airplane mounted lasers they actually are planning on building satelites to shoot projectiles at balistic missiles.

Believe it or not satelleites already are armed with ballistic missiles and laser defences, all part of the space raace and the cold war

What about PRC's submarine launched missiles?
Warsmith

They are not classed as ballistic missiles as such, and in most cases i do believe can be shot down/disabled by methods already in use by the worlds major military powers. (The ones which have subs)
