A friend IMed me this message; it better not be true

Because of our overloading of our servers, we are being forced to extract our non-active AIM users. Because this is a free service, AOL has exceeded the budget for the AIM service. We are asking that you send this exact message to 20 other AIM users to ensure us that you're an active AIM user. Our system tracking devise will pick up this message to keep you on our active list. You have 72 hours to complete this task or your service will be cancelled immediately. Starting January 1st, 2005, we will be charging a small fee for registering of a screen name for AIM. Thank you for your time and for using AOL or AIM.
Sincerely,
Mark Jenkins

Mmkay .... clue #1: AOL, and other major companies like it, would not use such a tactic. It's like those old hoaxes that say the email is being monitored and if it reaches X number of circulations, everyone who circulates it will get $10,000 of Bill Gates' money.

It's a hoax. Ignore it.

I have a standing policy, also, that if you send me such drivel, I block all further internet communications from you. Even if you're my mother.

Stop the insanity!

you must not have had an IM service very long. you will get hundreds of these "messages". you learn to ignore them. they are all stupid scams started by people with too much time on their hands.

My dad works for AOL, this isn't happening. It was my away message today: "Stop sending me that damn AOL is ending AIM thing or I'll block you permanently." I blocked six friends today. :headbang:

this is very likely a computer worm and trojan..... IF you get this message, definitely do not open any attachments or picture images, and do a virus scan, adware scan and anything else you can think of, and definitely don't accept any files.... it might just be a hoax, but if a lot of AIM users are getting this, then I suspect infection....

thankfully I don't use AIM (latest version doesn't like Windows 98)
