Greatest band? My vote would go to Emperor.

Best singer? Either Christina Scabia, Tarja from Nightwish or Ihriel from Peccatum. Or some opera singer.

Pink Floyd would definately have my choice for best album ever (the Wall), but the best singer/band/musician I would probably have to say... ... Pink Floyd as best band/musician(s) and best singer would be Sebastian Bach or Rob Halford.

Wow, so many no-namers named here.
Not to insult other peoples' tastes in music, but I honestly don't believe ANY band nowadays can equal that of the bands from the 70s. Like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, and even Aerosmith. Steven Tyler has one of the greatest ranges I've ever heard. I don't know if I'd count Robert Plant as one of the greater singers, but definitely John Bonham is an astounding drummer. Dave Guilmore is a guitar god, and just the whole ensemble of the Rolling Stones should speak for itself. And has anyone taken into consideration the talent of Guns N Roses? But to finalize my opinions, here's a list:
Greatest Band: Aerosmith (so upbeat and insane, pure rock, yet with their own repertoire of slow, easy songs)
Greatest Album: Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd (I love so many songs from Pink Floyd on there, there's no song on there that I don't like)
Greatest Singer: Steven Tyler (huge range)
Greatest Guitarist: Eric Clapton (I don't know how he does it, but he does. Hendrix was all show)
Greatest Drummer: John Bonham (as I drummer, I know drumming coolness when I find it, and he is amazing)
Greatest Bassist: Jon Paul Jones (another Led Zeppelin member, he had some awesome solos, particularly in Good Times Bad Times)
There you go. The opinions of the President of the Confederacy of Rickahna on rock music. It kicks ass.

Lots of great choices here. But none of them would have sung or played the way they do without Louis Armstrong (not so much late Louis, but the groundbreaking, world-famous genius of 20's and 30's Louis).

He basically created an entire genre of vocalising and phrasing, which in one way or other has been copied & modified throughout the century, from jazz singers, blues singers, rock singers, etc.

Greatest Bassist: Jon Paul Jones (another Led Zeppelin member, he had some awesome solos, particularly in Good Times Bad Times).
I've played bass for 15 years.
No John Paul Jones is pocket bassist-nothing special.
Victor Whooten-Best alive or dead of anyone I have ever encountered-anyone better is an unknown.
Jaco Pastori is far better.
Geddy Lee is better.
Cliff Burton was better.
Flea is better.
LZ is over rated.

Louis Armstrong is a fairly influential.
However, several musicians-Like Robert Johnson are equally influential if not more so.
Over all lines of music however I will give louis the winner seat.

I would never take away the influence that some musicians had on others. Robert Johnson of course had great influence. But Louis Armstrong influnced the type of music (and particularly the type of vocal phrasing) that Robert Johnson had. Louis was world-famous by 1925 (when Johnson was 14), and you couldn't escape the way that he sung.

i agree the beasties are probably one of the most original and creative not to mention funny groups ever in the rap category but i have to say for the most rockinest band would have to be pennywise they rule the lyrics the music is all played with such enthusiasm and energy they are awesome less than jake is another great band just because they are so much fun to see live and i can relate to their songs

Well, everybody's a critic. Hendrix is definitely one of the better guitar players I've heard, and a personal favourite from childhood, but I'm going to give the nod to Steve Vai for the six-stringer. Tori Amos on piano (and vocals) is just beautiful. The recent movie certainly helped remind people about Ray Charles (also a piano whiz).. but you know, I have a weakness for some pop-ish stuff from the 80's. I dig the Go-Go's. Jane's got a voice that just makes me melt, even 20 years later.

Best band - Lynyrd Skynyrd or Foo Fighters
Best singer- probably go with 'ol blue eyes
Best pop band - XTC
Best Guitarist- Steve Hackett (ex-Genesis), closely followed by slow hand Clapton
Best female vocalist - Randy Crawford
Best Canadian band - Bare Naked Ladies
Best British band - Queen or Beatles

Of the list I'd have to say the Beatles as they were true legends even though Queen are probably my favourite of all time.

I'd like to give a shout out for Bon Jovi. I know they're not the best band ever, but I like them so...

The Best Vocalist of all time is Freddy Mercury, hands down.

My favorite band personally is Wolfsheim.

It's really impossible to say who the greatest all-time band is, because of generation gaps, genre differences, not to mention where you live and who you even hear has a huge effect on your opinion.

While I really really like Jimi Hendrix, I wouldn't go so far as to say that he was the best musician ever.

When you talk about pure awesomeness of sound, I would have to go with Indian musicians like Ravi Shankar, and perhaps African styles, especially Ali Farka Toure. I personally perfer Tchaikovsky and Mendelsshon when it comes to western classical...of course, who can't like Beethoven. Bach was good too, but I think I have a preference for Russian composers. I also like Cuban and Caribbean music, like the Buena Vista Social Club.

The Blues and Jazz have also produced a fair amount of good musicians. Taj Mahal, Robert Johnson, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, and perhaps the Isley Brothers (although I suppose they are more funk/R&B) are ones that come to mind. There are also quite a few good Jazz artists around today.

When it comes to more modern styles, I would have to rate Jimi Hendrix as the best guitarist, with Stevie Ray Vaughn close behind. Bob Dylan is up there too.

As for best band, mabye the Who or Led Zeppelin? Both I like, and I don't think I would be able to rate one above the other. The Beatles were also very good, but I don't think they were ever instrumentally up to the standards of Zep and the Who. Jethro Tull deserves mention as well.

I think David Byrne and the Talking Heads are the best band of the late 70's-early 90's era. Very interesting and different music. David Byrne, while not possessing a technically good voice, gets my vote as best singer because he's just that awesome.

http://www.ars.pl/images/filmy/StopMakingSense/1.jpg

Rap also gets...well...a bad rap these days which is not entirely deserved. While a good deal, perhaps even most of today's most publicized and advertised music is more sales pitch than band, rappers like the Beastie Boys and Jurassic 5 are much closer to what rap and hip-hop is supposed to be.
