Just out of curiousity for all you artists out there? If you're a musician or singer, what do you do and who is your biggest idol or influence?
I play electric bass and my all time fav is Cliff Burton from Metallica (R.I.P.)
Anyone else?

Saxophone, and it's all the usual suspects (Bird, 'Trane, Lester, Dolphy, Kirk, Coleman, Sanders, etc.) Along with The World Saxophone Quartet, Rova Saxophone Quartet, Sex Mob, the bari and tenor player from The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
I started playing because as a kid I saw Clarence Clemens playing on a big white pedistal to Super Freak and thought he was the coolest lookin' dude ever, and it had to be because of the instrument. I stuck with it because of it's hybrid and unique nature in the development of music-and because it is leagues easier to play than other instruments.

That's really cool. I have never seen any saxophonist (did I say it right) play live before, but I always wondered why there weren't more. Sax just adds a level of smoothness to almost anything.

I'm the vocalist and rhythm guitarist in a band.
Biggest influences Pixies, Radiohead, Estel, U2, any ther big or vaguely alternative act probably......
I also play piano and trumpet, sometimes with the band.

Oh yeah, I play trumpet too. It's a nice mix up for a rock band. And Pixies rock!!! Sorry, I don't know Estel (but now I'm curious). :)

You have to pay extra for horns, and they really don't work everywhere. When I was playing for my bread it was a little heartbreaking to have to say, "You know, a sax just doesn't work here."
But saxophonists are everywhere. I think we number just below guitarists. You can't throw a rock without hitting a guitarist.
Guitar. I have too many influences to name, but lately i've been cranking the Wah and trying to do a Jimi :p
I'm also practising vocals...but I can't say i'm any good, lol

That's exactly right. But then again, in the words of my guitar teacher "Sure, everyone might play guitar...but how many of those can play it well?"

I'm an amateur folk musician. My instrument is the fipple flute. I'd have to say that my biggest influences ,at least lyricly are "Peter ,Paul, and Mary" and also Barry Mcguire.

When I made the transition from trying to be a professional musician to trying what I'm doing now it was when I started playing with this kid that made me make an important distinction:
I had a saxophone, he played it.

Guitarists may be everywhere, but I know a hundred really good guitarists who can't write songs. They can play any Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page solo note and tone perfect but have no ideas of their own.
And Estel are an independent Irish post-punk istrumental band. Who are absolutely brilliant live. If you want to check them out - http://www.thumped.com/estel/
Just in addition, I'm an average guitarist at best, but I'm a REALLY good singer :P

I'm a vocalist and i'd have to say my influences are def' Bono, Paul Mcartney and Avril Lavigne. I know. Avril isn't cosher, but her style is unique and it's not something easily imitated.

Heh, yeah.
I don't want to be professional. (Though it would be nice to have a million selling album :P) I just play because I like the instrument and the fact that theres always something new to learn. That's all that really matters to me.

I've played the piano for 8 or 9 years, and the guitar for about a year and a half.
I don't really have any influences.... I just play because I love doing it.
I've been wanting to learn another instrument, maybe a saxaphone or a horn of some kind. But I have asthma, do any of you know if that would stop me? I've been told before that I probably shouldn't, but I just thought I'd get some more oppinions.

And yeah, playing any form of brass wind instrument will be a problem if you are asthmatic, it takes too much consistent breathing, so it'll be tough.

Doesn't matter. Playing with people who are into different styles is a good thing and broadens your musical range heaps. I've played with people who are into hip-hop, grunge, blues, punk, metal, etc...
You end up adding bits and pieces from those genres in your playing even if you settle on one style :)

I'm one of those folks who only wishes he could play guitar or any musical instrument for that matter (though I have been known to shake my share of tambourines, heh). I sing karaoke, but that's about it.
However, I write a LOT of lyrics. My biggest influences in that regard are Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Stevie Nicks, Neil Young, Carly Simon, plus some others I'm forgetting at the moment. My favorite is Stevie Nicks.

We tried that with a bass player who liked funk, and it didn't work out. he kept wanting to put Bass solos that just dround out the rest of the music. On bass, my biggest influences are Cliff Burton (Metallica), Robin Eaglestone (Cradle of Filth), James Jamerson (many, many bands) and Vortex (Borknagar/Dimmu Borgir).
On Trombone I don't know, probably some of the early 20th century classical pieces that had a lot of brass.
On piano, my biggest influences are Mustis (Dimmu Borgir) and Shostakovitch
On Guitar my biggest influences are the bands Emperor, Dimmu Borgir and (old) Metallica.
On vocals, my biggest influences are Ihsahn (Emperor), Vortex, Abbath (Immortal) and Peter Steele (Type-O-Negative)

Yeah. The good news, though, is that I got a lot of classes out of the way thanks to AP tests. I should hopefully be down to nothing but music classes and fun liberal arts classes by my junior year.

I started out with a trumpet, and gradually picked up most of the rest of the brass.
I became a vocalist by default (you have to do something during those songs that don't require a horn section). I took just enough keyboard class to be able to find my way around when composing, but I can't perform.
I can wail a passable blues harmonica, a relatively competent tin whistle if I am in front of an uneducated audience, and have been known to get behind a drum set, when the need arose, without being pelted by rotten fruit.
The only time I made a living at it was a brief run in the US Army as a bandsman. Long story, but it is hard to get out of certain specialty fields once you are qualified, even if the Band Master asks nicely.
Lately, I am doing a lot more composition. I found a great piece of software, Harmony Assistant, that does polyphonic scores, percussion, and exports to MP3. Do any of you use something else?
Oh, my influences are pretty varied. I like the baroque style, Mozart, Chicago, and Rich Mullins, among many others.

I use Noteworthy Composer myself, but that's mainly because I can't figure out how to make my stupid Finale Workbook work.

Thanks to poverty I can only do any work on my trusty Roland PMA-5, which is sort of substandard. Not sort of.....
I have a Mac now (because music seemed too stable, I went on to get my degree in film....) so I can get some proper music programs, but I still haven't completely sorted the thing out for media design yet, so music programs will have to wait (all programs will have to wait until I buy another external harddrive since one of my documentries is sitting on my hard drive taking up all my space.)
Its been a while and the programs that I learned on where defunct when I learned them, so it's gonna be fun trying to find one that suits me. Preferably one that can do double duty as a scoring tool for 'natural' instruments and create and sweeten sound on my films.

I play electric guitar, and I suppsoe my influences are the guitarists I listen to. Unfortunately some of them are legendary, so I'm continually disappointed. :p
Jimmy Page- Led Zeppelin
Brian May- Queen
Daron Malakian- System of a Down (give me a break... his stuff is relatively easy to play... and he has a nice sparkly guitar!)
Chad Taylor- Live
Jack White- The White Stripes
I also like Cat Stevens. And I have an uncle who's a really awesome blues guitarist, and he helps me out quite a lot.
K... im a drummer first of all but i hav started learnin electric guitar n singin... i don really hav ne idols i jus luv 2 play
I had no problem practicing fun stuff, or playin' little jam sessions-but actually practicing reading was a hassle
Ugh, I know the feeling.

I hated sight-reading. I was ok at it, I just hated it.
Then I stopped taking formal lessons :)
Here's a question, as regards singing - can you be taught to be a competent singer?
I think it's something you either have or haven't, although you cna hone it with training etc. obviously
But my mate says he wants me to TEACH HIM to sing. Now I'm assuming nobody here has heard me sing, but he said he wants to sound "!just like me" and has even offered money.
He's not a very good mate,so I might just take him up on it :p
Well, you have to know how to sing in a different key, etc. right?
I mean, I can sing along with a piece of music fairly well, and i'm not bad doing some covers- but it's the theoretical knowledge that is daunting and holds me back from actually taking lessons and becoming a vocalist.

Nuts to that, you're not gonna learn.
In fairness I sing by ear, but I could teach him songs he likes (which he says he wants) and proper breathing techniques, as well as when to add in trills/slurs etc and basic technical stuff.
But I mean, I've heard him singing, and he's not tone-deaf, but he's not.....um.......good.

Just out of curiousity for all you artists out there? If you're a musician or singer, what do you do and who is your biggest idol or influence?
I play electric bass and my all time fav is Cliff Burton from Metallica (R.I.P.)
Anyone else?
I'm a singer, actor, dancer, idol is Baz Lurman, Nicole, Robbie and many more.

I play alto saxophone, used to play bari sax too but I don't have it any more.
I started violin at the beggining of this year and had to start learning piano two days ago.
I like Eric Marianthol, Ornette Coleman, Benny Goodman, jerry mulligan, the soweto string quartet, shostakovich (though I sound nowhere near as good as any of them) and more but its rather late.
