Hate crimes

Are there any other liberals on here who feel that hate crimes are incredibly hypocritical?

How can we define a difference between murdering someone based on race, and murdering someone in a robbery? Is the crime not the same? One is based on race, one is based on economic class.

What about intent? In a hate crime, you have the intent to commit the murder. In a robbery, your intent was to steal but didn't actually have the intent to kill anyone in the process. I should look up what distinguishes the two from a legal standpoint, but I would think that would have something to do with it.

Legal standpoints vary, but motivation is very important

Maybe people should be supplied with non-lethal (note: not 'less lethal' like tasers or riot guns) weapons to protect themselves. Unfortunately, this means the aggressor also has the weapon, making this a catch-22

Ah, but then there'd be no reason to kill if you're commiting a robbery, because you could just incapacitate the person and take the money... unless a lethal weapon would give you a strategic advantage... Hmm.

Yes, someone turning up in your home with a brick is a bit of a puzzler when you are armed with a rubber chicken...

How about someone who commits premeditated murder that is in no way involved in a hate crime. Is that in anyway a different crime.

Do any murders not involve hate. How can race or sexual orientation of the victim be considered in trying a murderer. Does that not show a great deal of beneficial treatment concerning victims rights? And if so would that not be unconstitutional?

Yes, murders by people with no emotion because they do not understand it is wrong. They murder because someone is in the way, not because they hate, but because it would be the most efficient way of dealing with them.

Or someone who murders for the buzz of the kill

Yes, these are sociopaths, and there have been a good number of them. But they are far from the norm.
