What kind of car do you have/are getting?
Only post a response if you know you are getting a car, don't say you will be getting your moms Navigator if you are 12 years old. Hell, if you're younger than 14 don't bother posting here.

Hell, if you're younger than 14 don't bother posting here. Why so grumpy? 14 year olds have opinions and wishes as well.
As for me - I run a 10 year old turbo-diesel Montego estate. Roomy (for a European car), pop-up seats in the boot, so a 7-seater when I need it to be, and best of all - does over 50mpg - sometimes nearer 60. For those who don't know what a Montego is...it's a rusty old bucket made by Rover in the UK

I had to get rid of my '90 Mitsubishi Pickup, the clutch housing pulled away from the firewall and I had to hold it together with a pair of vice grip pliers and a stick of wood, I had to put a 1/2 a bottle of brake fluid in to drive 7 miles to work and another 1/2 to get home. I changed the oil about 5 or 6 times in the 13 years I had her. She started every morning, every evening. What kind of replacement should I get that will take the same type of abuse? Should I stick to Mitsubishi?

Lesbian walks up to car and knocks on the driver's window. Window rolls down.
Lebsian: "Hi there beautiful, care to give me a....... HOLY CRAP YOU'RE A GUY?!?"

Lebsian (Running from car): "Disgusting!"

I love that car. I only buy American and Saab is owned by GM so my money ends up in Detroit. On a drive to O'Hare from my home in Valpo, my fuel efficiency was 38 MPG. Pretty good given the large engine. The aluminum engine actually is fuel efficient and powerful. The V-6 version was rare in the 95 model year. The car has 124,000 miles and runs like new with no major problems. It is fully loaded and has good traction control, leather, sun roof, ABS, heated seats, power seats, power windows, AC, heat, radio, a computer that even reminds you to call ahead for service, 6 disk CD changer and an anti-theft system including a chip in the key to make hot wiring impossible.

I'll be getting a learner's permit in January, and may get a new car as early as a year from now. I really don't care about cars, so I've decided on a Toyota Prius. It makes the greener side of me happy (green as in both the environment and my wallet), and it has a smooth, quiet ride. I know this one guy who, while a successful businessman, lives in the same farmhouse as his grandparents, and is so frugal, he flushes only after four uses (at least that's what his wife tells me ;)). Anyhow, he has one to save money on gas, and it is incredibally quiet.

Since we're posting mpgs here too:
I have a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT with /all/ the works (massive stereo, tires, etc, blah, blah) running an average of 22mpg and with 140,000 miles on it. I'll be selling it soon to get a new truck. I'm debating between a Chevy 1500 HD or another Ranger ... either way I'm putting in a new suspension system, sound system, and supercharger. I need an everyday work truck that can handle some serious abuse.
A 2004 Honda Aero (shaft drive cruiser: motorcycle) with 3000 miles on it that does 55mpg average
I have a 1981 Datsun 280ZXT that averages about 20mpg and has 260,000 miles on the body and 40,000 on the rebuilt engine. Currently rebuilding the rotor shaft and then selling it. Cheap. It's fun (in line 6 with a turbo!), but I'm more interested in other projects now.
I just finished rebuilding a 1950 GMC truck that gets about 8mpg but can tow a house. (already sold)
My new project (besides the Datsun) is a 1969 El Camino SS that's looking like it'll reach over 800hp and 800ft-lb of torque ... and about 10mpg. It'll probably be done in 2 years, then I'm getting it track tested and selling it (after cruising in it for a while ;)

It was very close the engine was loud, she had awful gas mileage, and it idled at about 1500 RPM. Afterwards it was quiet, she got 5 miles more per gallon, and it idled at about 800 RPM.

Foreign car companies are not unionized and therefore are worse for the United States' economy. They are more dangerous in crashes, because they are smaller, so I'd trade off gas mileage for safety. I consider people that willfully buy a foreign car unpatriotic, I buy something made in America whenever I can.

Foreign car companies are not unionized and therefore are worse for the United States' economy. They are more dangerous in crashes, because they are smaller, so I'd trade off gas mileage for safety. I consider people that willfully buy a foreign car unpatriotic, I buy something made in America whenever I can.
First off, being smaller does not equate with being more dangerous, as most people think. Do not judge a book by it's cover. Not to mention, ALL manufacturers are making smaller models these days, not just foreign companies. AND - you should do your research before making a blanket statement like that: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ncap/Index2.cfm. For the 2005 passenger car ratings that have been done so far; the Honda Civic ranks higher than the Buick Century, Chevy Cavalier, Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Neon, Ford Focus, and Pontiacs GrandAm and Sunfire, just to name some.
As for being unpatriotic because I didn't buy an American-engineered car, that's not even worth my time to argue because it's so stupid. I will leave you with this: while you oppose foreign companies making a home base here, and having some of that money go back to their economy, I bet you think nothing of the American companies that have locations around the world.

on the link I just posted for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, you have to scroll to the bottom and specify "passenger car" and "2005" to see the ratings I was referring to - the link automatically defaults to the "vans" page.

For some guy named Futurepeace, you sure get really defensive don't ya?
FYI: If you want peace in the future, don't try to start fights. Only thing that results is someone getting hurt. ;)

I really like the new Mustang, but I like my explorer more.
For cargo or road visability?
I learned to drive using my dad's '67 Cougar and shortly thereafter got my own. I've always driven low to the ground, so I plan to at the very least *rent* the new Mustang sometime next year while in Canada or Pennsylvania to see if it rides like the '00.
But the trunk space in my current 'stang is sorta limited. I can pull down my seats if I have extra long stuff, but realistically it is a 2.5 person car.

You're right, I was a bit defensive. And I am sorry to Kahta if it was inferred that I was calling them stupid. I was actually thinking that it is unjust, and un-wise to have such a judgemental opinion about another person you know nothing about, especially when one is so un-informed on the topic.
And this would be a girl named Futurepeace - one who will try to practice being level-headed and not take things so personally :)

First of all, read the fine print: Accident ratings for a car are only comparable with cars within 500 lbs. There is a big safety difference between a Ford Crown Victoria and a Hona Civic.
People in other countries cannot afford to buy American built cars because of the strength of the dollar. Thats why cars are dumped here from Japan and Korea. The Lexus RX300 would cost $15,000 more if it was made in the USA.
An American company is still based in America, meaning that I'd rather help a company that employs Americans, Toyota employs Americans only at the bottom levels. Ford employs Americans from the top to the bottom.
For cargo or road visability?
Safety.
I know everyone is going to yell: "OMFG ROLLOVER" but consider this, I'd rather be in my SUV with 4 wheel drive than any other car in the winter. And don't start to yell about gas mileage either, I recycle everything that I can, so I counterbalance myself. (I'd actually recycle either way)
I love my Mazda. And my fiance loves her Toyota. We love foreign cars.
My smaller car is also more agile on the roads giving me a better chance of avoiding an accident all together.
Being in a small car won't help when you're t-boned by an Escalade. Being in a small car does not improve your chances of survivng an accident.
Lets run through some situations in which you might get into an accident:
1. On a highway, a car in front of you slams its brakes on. You slam your brakes on and avoid a crash. You survive.
2. You come to a stop at a 4 way intersection. The car behind you is manned by an 85 year old retiree. He presses the gas instead of the brake. You see him coming, and floor it, but your four engine cylinder isnt enough. He hits your car. You get severe back and neck injuries because your car was thrown forward so violently.
3. It is snowing outside. As you approach a traffic light, your car starts to slide because its small. Your car slides through the traffic light, and an oncoming F-350 strikes the passenger side of the car, but you are killed anyways.
4. A deer jumps in front of your car. You slam your brakes on, but the deer gets hit. Because your car is low to the ground, the deer falls on the hood, and slides up. Its antlers hit you in the face, knocking out 5 teeth, fracturing your jaw, and gouging an eye.
5. You are on the highway. A car ahead of you swerves to avoid a soccer mom talking on her cellphone. You then turn your steering wheel sharply, and because of that, your car drives off the road into a tree. At 70 MPH, the airbags are of little effect. You die on impact.

A BMW Z3 coupe (I love the way the funky hatchback looks) probably used, the 2001's look good.
That will be right after I buy a new bicycle with carbon forks and rear stays and a full Ultegra component group, including a ten speed rear cluster and triple chainring. Sorry but I value bikes even over sportscars.
Since I'm 43, own my own home and 4 cars right now and will sell my late mothers home this summer, I actually will get these things and am not just blowing smoke like most everyone else who posted here. Sorry kids.

Ideally I'd like an armored car... like a Lincoln Navigator, Mercedes S500, or Chevy Tahoe.

Right now Im driving a late model Honda Accord - it has Ghanal syndrome (4 doors) and it looks like a grandpa vehicle compared to what I normally drive - but its great on gas and its good for long trips. Previously my cars were hot rods, my first (and Im still in love with it) was a no post 67 Chevelle which I had to sell to afford school. The last was a 64 Shortbox Chevy, which I had to sell only a short period of time after I had finished building it - this summer im shooting to buy a mid fifties roadster, something along the lines of a 54 belair convertible... I cant wait!
Heres a not-so-good scanned pic of my truck just before it got lowered and I put the body chrome back on (http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4cf27b3127cce9a3cf67d8fe700000016109AcOGjVm4b4)
:p and yes, I realize I should have taken the pic after a little more smoke built up from the burnout!

Whenever I do get a car, the odds are it will be one of these three cars. A Honda Civic, a Honda Accord or a Toyota Corrolla. Good gas mileage and very reliable. And they are pretty good at keeping their value.
Hehe, I've got a white '93 Camry. Nothing fancy, which is good, as I've made more than a few driving mistakes with it when I was just learning.
However, we also have an old ('47, I think, but my memory could be off) Willys Jeep that we (my dad & I) are fixing up. I love it, even if it isn't one of those super fast little cars that everyone seems to want.
Get this, my mom recently sold her sporty little Jaguar so she could buy a Camry, because she didn't like the attention she was getting when she drove it. XD Why couldn't she have given it to me? (Okay, so the insurance would be through the roof, but still...)

2004 Civic Ex, unfortunately automatic. Although it's less fun to drive than a manual, it still gets pretty much the same performance as if it was. Gotta love that VTEC! :)
