I've got a debate coming up. The motion is "This House believes Democracy does not exist". I'm a proposition speaker. I need to know how Bush cheated and stole the election.

Note: This is not for arguing as to whether there was or wasn't cheating. For the purposes of this debate, i have to assume their was (personal opinion aside).

Thanks in advance.

Watch Fahrenheit 9/11, it should give you plenty of material.

Although, I would prepare to not get any information of use from this thread, it will be a Democrats/Republicans suck flamewar within 30 minutes.

I can't help you, as the people who made up this fantasy also came up with the theories that the Apollo moon landings were faked and that Jewish people were warned about 9/11 (it being an Israeli plot). They also did the one with Hillary Clinton and the condom christmas tree in the white house and the one about OJ Simpson being truly innocent.

Conspiracy theories are best left alone. :)

So you can dispute every claim even the true ones like she was the Campaign manager, she was elected later, and more?

And it starts, asking for unbiased information on here is like asking a nun for sexual advice.

Bosworth. I have a BBC video file expose on the election. If you want me to host it somewhere for you to download from, send my country a telegram and I'll give you the link.

A simple way to prove that democracy does exist. Have them pick between two things. Lets say for example raising one of their hands. Tell them that they can raise any one of their hands or they could bother not raising any of their hands. This is of course assuming that everybody has two hands. Now count how many people raise each hand. Since there were only two options for which hand to raise finding the majority is quite simple. You can ignore anybody who didn’t raise their hand. They are omitting their right to raise their hand. If there is a tie, have a debate to try to get people to change which hand they raised and to get people who didn't raise their hand to raise their hand in the next vote. Then keep having a vote until there isn't a tie any more. Now which ever hand that was raised the most is the hand that most people preferred to raise at that time and would therefore be in the majority. “This house‘s” beliefs are proven wrong. Democracy does indeed exist.

Now whether or not it exists in the political world, that's another issue. Certainly it does exist in the lower governments, but not at some of the highest offices. With the president the people only get to vote for how they want their states votes to be given out. It’s an indirect representative form of democracy, the president still needs to get the majority of state votes to win. If they only get the plurality of state votes then they still have to get the majority of congressional votes. It's a democracy, it's indirect as far of citizens go, but it's still a democracy. They're the ones who voted in the electorate through a direct democracy.

You are in a tough position and, basically, you can not argue that position rationally or within any reasonable debate rules. But you can always just demagogue :-). Generally, just be very careful and try to steer away from certain facts, e.g. that the Supreme Court actually voted 7-2 (rather than 5-4) that the recount as demanded by Gore (and mandated by Florida Supreme Court) was unconstitutional while the infamous 5-4 vote was only on the question of whether the deadline for any potential recount was expiring at midnight that day - just try to stick entirely to that vote and ignore the first one. Whatever you do, don't allow the discussion to steer towards places like Missouri or Wisconsin (where Gore's vote was inflated illegally). Don't go into conspiracy theories about Bush cousin making Fox call Florida for Bush since hours earlier Fox actually called Florida for Gore (or if you do, just claim that at that time Bush cousin was too distracted by stealing the election elsewhere :-). Ignore the long recount by newspapers over the spring and summer 2001 (which showed that Bush indeed won Florida) or claim that The New York Times is a an organ of right-wing propaganda. Or just be bold and claim that Bush stole the election in Texas.

Another idea. Just say that the US is a republic rather than a democracy and you'll be absolutely right.
