NFL Midseason Report

The NFL season is halfway over, so I suppose it's time to update my picks. I can't find my preseason report, but I know just from memory that I made alot of mistakes in my preseason picks, such as Carolina and Kansas City running away with their respective divisions, and the Steelers and Falcons pulling up the rear of their divisions. So now I'll redo my picks with eight weeks to go.

AFC East

New England: 13-3
NY Jets: 10-6
Buffalo: 7-9
Miami: 1-15

AFC North

Pittsburgh: 14-2
Baltimore: 10-6
Cincinnati: 6-10
Cleveland: 5-11

AFC South

Indianapolis: 11-5
Jacksonville: 11-5
Houston: 8-8
Tennessee: 6-10

AFC West

San Diego: 11-5
Denver: 10-6
Kansas City: 7-9
Oakland: 4-12

NFC East

Philadelphia: 14-2
NY Giants: 9-7
Washington: 6-10
Dallas: 4-12

NFC North

Minnesota: 11-5
Green Bay: 8-8
Detroit: 7-9
Chicago: 4-12

NFC South

Atlanta: 12-4
Tampa Bay: 8-8
New Orleans: 6-10
Carolina: 2-14

NFC West

Seattle: 10-6
St. Louis: 8-8
Arizona: 5-11
San Francisco: 3-13

I know those wins and losses probably don't equal out, because I didn't go through and individually pick each game. I just went through each teams scheduled and looked at the matchups and made the picks. For some of the games between losing teams, I might have picked them both to lose. So it's not perfect.

Anyway, here's my playoff picture:

AFC:

San Diego over Indianapolis
Jacksonville over NY Jets

Pittsburgh over Jacksonville
New England over San Diego

Pittsburgh over New England (oh, how that pains me to say!)

NFC:

Green Bay over Minnesota
Seattle over NY Giants

Philadelphia over Green Bay
Atlanta over Seattle

Philadelphia over Atlanta

For your all Pennsylvania Super Bowl, and current trendy pick, Philadelphia vs. Pittsburgh!

I figure Miami should be able to pull one more out of somewhere, perhaps against fellow bottom-dweller San Fransisico :p

I doubt the Steelers are going to the Superbowl. I think they'll win the AFC North for the same reason the Falcons will win the NFC South, no real competition.

Stayley is hurt and Bettis can't carry the load that long. Roethilsburger is working well in the system, but he hasn't shown himself to be the type who can drag a team to victory.

I'll say 12-4 because I like their defense.

Whats really depressing is that my Giants are almost officially out of it.

I thought so, but not after Wannstedt resigned. They would have just barely been able to pull one out with an experienced NFL coach at the helm; I don't think they stand a chance with an offensive coordinator running the show.

Well they're saying Staley is going to be back next week. His hamstring is feeling well, supposedly, and he almost played last week. And looking down their schedule, the only potential pitfalls I see for them is week 13 against the Jaguars and week 16 against the Ravens.

And I don't necessarily think the G men are out of it. They sure as heck aren't going to take the NFC East, but in the weak NFC, anyone's got a shot at the wild cards.

Depends on how long Strahan is out and if Coughlin decides to give up on Warner and begin the Reign of Manning.

Yeah, Vick is awesome, but he's already shown he can't do the West Coast offense, and if last season is any indication, that team can't live without Vick. The more he runs, the more likely he is to get hurt, which means he's more likely to miss games, and that means Falcon losses.

True, but they can split 4-4 the rest of the season and still make the playoffs on a 9-7 record. And they've got games remaining against Arizona, Washington, Cincinnati, and Dallas, all very winnable. Plus games against Baltimore and Atlanta, which are concievably winnable for them. The only sure losses left for the G men are week 12 against the Eagles and week 15 against the Steelers. Don't fret; there's still hope for the Giants.

Well Atlanta is going to take the weakest conference in football going away, and with Minnesota sliding and Seattle and St. Louis battling for mediocrity, the Falcons will probably get a bye and win their first playoff game, but they aren't going to get past Philadelphia.

Green Bay: 8-8

Chicago: 4-12

You put my Lions at 7 and 9!?! How dare you!

Nah, you're prboably right about them placing third in the NFC North. Or so I hope. They're getting better, but still need some work. :p

Well, they've dropped consecutive games to Dallas and Washington, not exactly powerhouses. Those kinds of performances do not make one optimistic about their chances to beat teams like Jacksonville, Indianapolis, Minnesota twice, or a resurgent Green Bay.

I agree. Still, they're looking better than they have over say the past few years. Still ya can't sue me for wanting to be optomistic since since all the Lions fans out have had to put up with a horrible to mediocre team for close to 50 years now, seeing as we haven't won a championship since the fifties.

They certainly are the most impressive team in football right now, but let's wait and see if Roethlisberger hits the Week 11 wall.

I'm still figuring out which two games the Patriots are supposed to lose.... all their remaining games are against teams who are sub .500 except for Baltimore (5-3 with poor offense and that game is in New England) and the Jets (who they've already beat)....

Plus, by the playoffs there will be a much better book on how to contain Roethlisberger, and with any luck the Pats won't have to face them without Law AND Dillon out.

Well, with their defense in the sorry state that it's currently in, Priest Holmes in two weeks is a very unpromising game for the Pats, as well as Jamal Lewis and Baltimore the week after that. If the Patriots get some of their defensive starters back earlier than expected, then those games ought to be wins, but with all the injuries neither of those games are sure things.

Ummmm - well Defence is not only going to be New England's problem. Hell - Kansas has already given up 211 points this season! Not to mention that Priest is doubtful for this weekend with that strained MCL, Bleylock is also on the limp, and so is Barber. So who is going to be healthy in two weeks still remains to be seen.

But yeah - the Pats are pretty banged up at CB - amongst other things.

Their run D has been rather suspect all season, so any outstanding back is going to make a rough day for the Patriots. I suppose I didn't take Priest's injury into consideration, but it's still not a lock for the Patriots. I can still see them losing to the Chiefs, Ravens, and if Pennington comes back from HIS injury, Jets.

And besides, if I called the Patriots 15-1, you'd all accuse me of being a homer.:)

I'd watch out about the Steelers, though. If Staley's injury is worse than it appears, then the running game falls solely to Bettis, who probably can't handle 25 carries a game for the rest of the season and playoffs. Also, Roethlisberger might fall back to Earth. He's a rookie, and alot of rookies hit a wall in week 13 or 14 because they're used to a 11 or 12 week season, and don't handle the extra bunch of games very well. They've got games against Jacksonville, the NY Jets, and Baltimore that they could very well drop. They aren't a lock for 15-1 by a long shot, but it's pretty likely considering their current performance.

I have my doubts that the Saints will win another game this season--they have to score 30 points just to be in the game, and lately, they've been giving up 40 per, so they're in deep trouble. I'm betting Haslett won't make the end of the season.

It's the defensive coordinator that is now the coach. As a 25 year dolphn fan it really pains me to watch this season. I am just looking forward to the entire team being fired and getting a high draft pick.

my picks
AFC Division winners New England, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, San Diego
possible wild cards Baltimore, New York Jets, Jacksonsville, (too hard to tell at this point) and in a bit of wishful thinking but they may surprise us Houston

Pittsburgh winning all of their home games rest of the year, same with New England, Indianapolis going down as soon as they play either in the playoffs, San Diego going down to a wild card, and a rematch between Pittsburgh and New England, probably in New England, and New England returning to the Super Bowl

NFC Division winners Philadelphia, Minnesota, Atlanta, Seattle,
possible wild cards New York Giants, Detroit, others are just anybodys guess as to possible but I will stick with those myself

Philadelphia will dominate and have the home field advantage, Minnesota and New York Giants getting to the second round easily over any body else although Seattle with its running game if they play Minnesota in the playoffs will beat them. Either Seattle or Minnesota taking on the Eagles and the Eagles winning the NFC Championship

and getting beat by New England in the Superbowl.

and next year, if they don't make it this year, Houston gets a wild card spot and a trip to the playoffs.

Bout time, I say. They need a coach that will knock a little sense in them, a quarterback that doesn't spend half the year on the injured list, and running backs and WRs that can stay healthy and actually do stuff...oh yeah, and not retire at 27. The defense can't do everything.
