Cruel and unusual punishments.

I'm just wondring what you guys consider to be cruel and unusual punishments as prevented by the American Constitution. This is not necessarily a serious thread so you can put things like:

-"You'll probably get away with crucifixion. First offence." Monty Python's Life of Brian.

-"I suggest buying a little cocker spaniel, placing the suspect's todger between two baps and shouting 'Dinner-time Fido!'" Blackadder Goes Forth!

Surgically peeling someone's skin from their body from head to toe in one long, slender, ribbon of flesh.

Alas, yet another of my lifetime goals that will never reach fruition.

Well, if you study hard in school and get good SATs........Too late. I'm done with school, including college. I guess I'll just have to take my chances with my back-alley clinic...

The punishment must suit the crime, right?

I would far prefer doing something unusual than something cruel myself, probably something seemingly merciful, but in reality far more devastating than "real punishments" (which reminds me, should mail our state senators about my thoughts about "legalization" of... something...)

In other words, I advocate re-education and employment of propaganda in correctional institutions, as well as subjection to conditions of such dependancy and immobility that they will have little desire to alienate them from society at a later time in such a drastic way.

Should work well with political activists.

Indeed, how dare they deviate?

I always thought the wording was strange, but I understand it to mean tortue or unnecessarily painful execution.

As a means of execution these should be considered cruel and unusual IMO:
Impaling, burning, electrocution, crucifixtion, being eaten by ants

All seem unacceptably painful, though electrocution is legal in a few states

And these methods should not IMO:
lethal injection, hanging, firing squad, beheading (as long as the blade's sharp)

These are relatively quick and/or painless.

Today, AFAIK there are no intentionally painful legal punishments allowed in any of the 50 states. Personally, I think a little flogging would be a much more cost-effective than fines and short-term prison sentences for certain crimes.

I've always been a fan of "an eye for an eye."

I don't see why this would count as cruel or unusual punishment; it's what the criminal felt acceptable to deal to the victims.

"Treat others as you would want them to treat you."

That would make a pretty tapestry.
