It's the same every year. Cities are Democrat strongholds, and rural residents tend to vote Republican.

There's a little too much on that map for me. Seems that people that live on the Mississippi, even in the south, prefer the democrats. Wonder why that is?

That stretch of blue in the South is the "Black belt", many of those states still have sizeable African American populations. I think in the 2000 results its even more pronounced in showing it.

I think a liberal came up with the color coding. ;) In addition to red being associated with communism, it is also associated (e.g., in military exercises) with the "bad guy" and blue with "our side." (e.g., fratricide or "friendly fire" is often referred to as "blue-on-blue")
