I wont go into all the details but if you hate Bush and most Republicans, blame this guy. He started the whole thing, of course the idea came up, but when he was elected they got more attention and when he was re-elected the Republican party was there to stay.

I'm sorry, but the Republican party of 1860 was very different from the Republican party of today.

The Republican party back then stood for much different ideals than now!

EDIT: Whoa, Roach, you beat me to it!

Whereas now, the Republican Party doesn't even stand for It's own ideals. Hehehe.

yeah, so ending slavery and the civil war wasn't good either. he did more for equality than any president before or after him. how can you not like him?

Well, there's no reason not to like Lincoln- unless, of course, you happen to be black, or Irish, or of any real recent immigrant stock, or just happen to be fond of the idea of 'equality'- freeing slaves and giving people rights are hardly the same thing. But aside from that, there's no reason to hate Lincoln- unless, of course, you don't like income taxes (yep, it was a Republican who started the whole thing!). But aside from those few, petty grievances, everyone loves Lincoln- except those of us who aren't fond of conscription.

Want me to keep going?

Check your Political History! The republican party DID NOT start under Abe Lincoln. He was just the 1st Republican President.

If you think the civil war was fought over slavery than you dont know jack shit. The civil war was fought over keeping the union together. There were states in the Union that Lincoln allowed to keep slaves, and when the south wanted to secede, Lincoln said, whoa dont leave you can keep your slaves, they said that wasnt the issue. He made a speech clearly saying that he didnt care about the slaves, and when and if they were freed he wanted to send them to Liberia.

Why stop with Lincoln on that point? Could always go back to the founding fathers who declared all men are created equal while they kept slaves at home.

okay, so lincoln helped keep the country united! the only reason i can see that any of you hate him is because he's republican, and that shows a lot about your character. i wont personally attack you more than that, and i appologize for even THAT, but i'm republican, and i dont dislike preisdents over their political party. i judge it by what they stood for and what they did. lincoln did a good job in my view, if you think differently, thats great, i have no problem. but to me, lincoln was a great president.

You are right, it is a process, I agree that it wasnt very good (here in brasil at least, it was badly done, like, people were free, but without food, job or home), but it was a start, up to today, americans donĀ“t see immigrants (for example) as equals, so, the process is still going.

I'm not shooting anyone, I just object to the widespread mentality of "look, here's a problem thread, let's contribute to the problem".

Okay, a couple things: First, most Democrats don't have a problem with Lincoln. Second, not everyone who does have a problem with Lincoln is a Democrat. Back in those days, the Democrats were for smaller government, something that the Republican party stood for until very recently (and for all I know still claims to stand for, although I can't see how they could do that with a straight face).

Correct and Correct! However, look at what the democrats have added to the Federal Government! They can't claim it either.

But they never tried. Well, not in this century, anyway.

edit: I just realized that "this century" doesn't mean a whole lot. I meant this one and the last one. :/

I dont think the starter of the thread said anything that should necessarily be warned. It is a good potential debate, but it all depends on everyone who replies to it, whether it becomes that...or just a flame war.

Although, he could have chose a better title....
