THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION: OCTOBER 2004
Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 337,000 in October, and the un-
employment rate was about unchanged at 5.5 percent, the Bureau of Labor
Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. Construction em-
ployment rose sharply over the month, and several service-providing indus-
tries also added jobs.
...
Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 337,000 in October to 132.0
million, seasonally adjusted. This followed job gains of 139,000 in Septem-
ber and 198,000 in August (as revised). Over the month, there was a large
job gain in construction as well as notable increases in several service-
providing industries. Since August 2003, payroll employment has risen by
2.2 million. (See table B-1.)

Why should I read and believe this when I can argue blindly.

I actually want employment to go down. As a repo man, I thrive when the economy goes down. Please don't pay for your car.

leech on society ;)
Oh how could we have elected Bush!!!???? Over 2 million jobs created in the last year, unemployment lower than the average of the last three decades, immediate action following the election to reform social security, health care, and education! <oh moan, gripe, tear my hair....oh doom, gloom and neverending torment> And worse yet, word has started leaking out that possible election day terrorist attacks were stopped. No blood in the streets, no nuclear fall-out. How can we live with such an incompetent fool?

A couple questions for anyone about this report...
a) if so many jobs are being created, why is the unemployment rate staying steady in practically every demographic?
"In October, the unemployment rates for the major worker groups--adult men
(4.9 percent), adult women (4.8 percent), teenagers (17.2 percent), whites
(4.7 percent), blacks (10.7 percent), and Hispanics or Latinos (6.7 percent)--
showed little or no change over the month."
b)if the jobs being created are so great...why the continued increase in this category?
"Over the year, the number of persons who held more than one job rose by
519,000 to 8.0 million, not seasonally adjusted."
Also note the construction jobs are, in part, due to hurricane reconstruction efforts. I wonder how many of those are likely to be "permanent" positions. More jobs is a good thing of course, but looking at the bigger picture I'm still not convinced this economy has fully rebounded by any means.
