Ehud Barak, the previous PM of Israel who came very close to peace with the Palestinians has announced that he'll be running against Sharon next election. Sharon is Likud, right wing, and Barak is Avoda (Labour) left wing. Personally, I hope he comes back to power. What do you think? Who would you prefer?

Anybody would be better than Sharon.

Netanyahu wasn't too bad either.

If I remember correctly, Barak was thought to be a hard-liner cause of his military past, but turned out to be a dove. He wasn't percieved as tough enough and got booted in favor of Sharon.

I hope the Israelis have the sense to go down Western Europe and Canada's path, rather than America and Russia's path.

Could you please bring Rabin back to life?
Anyway, the leaders won't change things. The population need to be less extremist for things to change. Leaders can't act without the population support. This is why Sharon is in power and this is why Arafat was in power and Hamas will likely take over.
Extremists need to lighten up, on both sides. They are the same people on both side.

I would not be surpised if they have the technology to bring people back to life :p ..

Anyway, I really don't give a crap anymore.. Raids will continue. Suicide bombings will continue.. "Targetted assassinations" i.e. mass killings will continue. The wall will not be shifted the Green Belt.. Deaths will mount..

Either way the Palestinians are screwed.. As they have been for the past 56 years.

Greenmanbry, you don't get this. He's left wing, i.e interested in peace, even if he has to give stuff back for it. Therefore, with him the Palestinians will have a chance.
Pyslos, Arafat forced his way into power, not because the people wanted him. There was no democracy involved. I will of course do my best to bring him back to life but hopes aren't high! Seriously though, Rabin was the best chance that the Palestinians had for peace. Now, they may again have a chance, with Arafat out of the way and Barak coming back into politics.

Rabin was the best chance the israelis had for peace.
From a palestinian point of view, it is more about justice.
As for Arafat, I fear Hamas will take over control of the palestinians. They provide the school, the medecine and the food already. They are the best positioned to take the power vaccum.

He'll get killed. Personally I want Netanyahu. He put so much fear in the hearts of the Hamas bastards in Gaza and the West Bank that they didn't dare **** with Israel when he was in charge. The terrorists can't win and with Netanyahu they won't.

Arafat was elected in 1996 as President of the Palestinian authority, with an 87% majority, in what international observers described as free and fair elections (elections where to happen again in 2002, but the guy was stuck in his office). So, how did he forced his way into power, without no democracy involved?

Exactly.. It was a democratic process. He's the only democratically-elected Arab leader, another reason the Arab world looks up to him..

And I agree, Barak would be much better than the current war criminal hogging the position of prime minister. I am only afraid that Sharon would somehow be instated Minister of Defense, and that would be worse for the Palestinians..

The only living Israeli statesman I respect and admire is Shimon Peres.
