Brits: Should there be a regional assembly for the North-East of England?
The election in the US has overshadowed most political thinkers recently. Today is the final day of the North-East referendum to set-up a regional assembly. Should it be created, or should control be maintained in Parliament? Did you vote?
Well, living in Yorkshire this is one thing that really affects me, it seems that it's devaloution gone to the extream, I mean most yorkshire people are happy to be English, we don't mind being like this. In fact the only people in england who really want to be devolved are the Welsh, the Scots, the Irish and the Cornish. The rest of us are happy.

Hell, if the Welsh, Scots and Irish in England get their wish and devolve, the whole devolution thing is going to get really confusing! ;)

Personally speaking I'm uncertain whether there should be further devolution or not. I can see the pros of it -the regions having greater autonomy- however, couldn't it also lead to greater internal strife?

I think you will find that the Scots who live in England dont have devolution, the Scots who live in Scotland do. Likewise the Welsh who live in England dont have devolution the Welsh who live in Wales do. Or perhaps there actually is a devolved Scottish Parliament in England that I am unaware of

Its a ridiculous idea imo, it is just an exscuse for the central government to waste money on something with little power, it will barely be able to do anything, probably have less powers then the Welsh Assembly, whilst all the time being thrall to westminster.
It is a cynical exercise for government (or rather [New] Labour) to consolidate power.
If Labour were serious about moving power closer to the people then Westminster would be all but disbanded and each area would have its own assembly. As it stands the plans simply creats another level of petty bureaucrats and politicians.

We keep devolving, yet we apparently want to intergrate more with Europe.
My head... it burns...

Yep, ever read that book, Theif. the Uk will end up like that.
Damn, looks like the no vote has put and end to the prospect of a North-West Assembly. And i'm not sure if the people of Yorkshire can be devolved any further without radically rethinking Darwinism

I like the whole idea of devolution, but I don't like what it would probably end up with. If we could just have devolved assemblies and just stop there it would be OK. But this is probably the government's ploy to carve up the country so we can be ruled easier by the EU.

Can I devolve my house, and then change the laws?
I could then shot any thiefs, Good Idea or what!
If we keep on with devolution, is each county going to have its own goverment. what's the difference between this and the County Councils?
