For those who are unaware, there have been some elections recently.

Ukraine will have a run off presidential election after the pro-Russia Prime Minister Vikto Yanukovych and pro-Western opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko ended the recent campaign in a dead heat.

In Australia PM John Howard defeated Labor's Mark Latham last month.

Cameroon's president Paul Biya was re-elected and sworn in Wednesday.

Upcoming elections are being held this month in: Czech Republic, Macedonia, Botswana, Niger, and Nambia.

Also, Burundi will be voting on a new constitution and the European Union just signed its European Constitution, which will be voted on in national referendums over the next two years.

While the U.S. is still the big dog on the porch it is not the only dog on the porch.

Don't forget about Afghanistan. The election there was the very first democratic election in that region in history.

This election in Kabul was more symbolic than actual though. Many people voted more than 5 times. They registered more votes than the Kabuli population.

If you mean, first attempt and you only include Afghanistan in region (since Iran, Iraq, Russia, and Pakistan EDIT: oh, and India, the largest democracy in the world, have all heald democratic elections and they surround it), then that would be correct.
