Is this it for Arafat?

His health has deteriorated but there is doubt as to whether he's in a coma.

Poor dude. Yep, most likely the end of the line for him. Lets hope the Palestinians pick a leader as good as Arafat, a peace nobel prize winner, that renounced the use of terrorist violence in the past. Shure, he wasnt perfect, but he tried.

If he does die, hopefully his successor will be a moderate who can win the state that the Palestineans wish for.

Arafat did not seem to fight for Palestinian autonomy the way I had hoped Abbas would - it just seems like Arafat sopke out of both sides of his mouth.

That is to not say from a purely human standpoint I'd wish this death on him.

Arafat fought hard for Palestinian Autonomy, signing the Israel - PLO accords in 1996, that rendered him the nobel peace prize. The thing is, after the election of Netanyau (or whatver is name) the relations with israel started to deteriorate, to the point that in the last two years, Arafat was kept like a dog in is office (despite he IS the ELECTED leader of his people). You can't fight for a palestinian autonomy from there, against hawks like Netanyahu or Sharon.

I think he was an incredible man who may be one of the most skillful polticians in history. To be in the situation he was in, and manage to stay alive is impresive. If he fought Israel any harder, he would've been killed. Israel sen helicopters to rocket blast an 80 year old blind deaf man in a wheelchair during his morning prayer. Don't tell me they wouldn't kill Arafat he got too uppity. On the other hand, if he capitulated too meekly to Israel's demands, Hamas would've killed him.

I think that like or hate the man, one has to be impressed that he acted as a buffer between these two extremes for as long as he did. Ehud Barak, his fellow peace prize winner was assassinated by an Israeli radical for trying to make peace too vigorously.

Hear Hear! :)

edit = By the way, it was Yitzhak Rabin that was assassinated by Zionist extremists. Ehud Barak is alive and kicking.. (unfortunately.. or fortunately.. depends on what side of the fence you're on.. no pun intended)

Argh! Rabin. Yitzhak Rabin. I messed that up. It was Rabin that won the NPP with Arafat, wasn't it?

Yes. Three men won the 1994 Nobel Prize for Peace, in recognition of their efforts to create peace in the middle east. Those three men were Yasser Arafat, Yitzhak Rabin, and Shimon Peres.

Well done LG... especially since you posted on my thread about Barak returning to politics.:)
The fact that Arafat broke every single part of the Oslo accord, obviously irrelevant, his peace prize should be taken away. The Oslo accord stated that he must recognize Israel's existence. He still doesn't.
