i have been interested in this for a very long time and would like to see how people whos opinions i respect (on this website) react to the question at hand.
in 1968, ritchard nixon won the presidential election by 110 electoral votes, but by a smaller popular margin then the one we've just been through. however, only 60.6% of eligible voters turned out, do you think hubert humphrey(the democratic opposition to nixon) would have won had more people turned out for the election?

No, I think the proportion would have been the same, if not more towards Nixon.

how so? most of the people who didnt vote in key states like california were young people, who are commonly considered democrats.
Because I'm mean, I'm wondering who 'ritchard' was. Was he a president of something? Maybe of the unteid sattes of Amekria?
Okay, now that that's out of the way... My own answer would be 'no' as well. The American public did not like Hugh Humphrey in such numbers. There was a real 'Anyone but Nixon' vote, yes. But there was also a general perception that he was still doing a decent job. Also, that's a silly question because I can't remember a voter turnout over 60% ever happening.

that was his first term

Good for that. BTW, typing goes faster if you use more than one finger. My point still holds, though.
If more people had gone to vote, Nixon would probably have increased his majority. But it wouldn't happen. 60.6% is pushing the limit, and pushing it severely. I'm surprised to learn that was how high the turn-out was.
