Poll Worker?

I'd like a thread to see how many other NationStaters are actually poll workers. I'm guessing, sadly, that few players actually do anything like this, and would like to encourage more of you to do so. In my county 17-year olds can work the elections even before they can vote! :) I think this is a wonderful program.

I've been working since 1998 (er, I think it was 1998 when I started ... I really should go find my first forms and confirm this). California has had many primary and special elections since then, so I've actually worked many elections between two different counties.

It really is a rewarding experience, but most importantly, it has given me the ability to make informed suggestions for changes to my county government and get involved in local politics. I've made several suggestions to my county and many of them they'd looked into adopting! :)

OPINION: People all too often focus just on national and international issues, where they have little influence and insight into the complexities. They ignore issues that are closer to home and that effect their daily lives.

OPINION: I think being a poll worker not only helps you have a better view of what your neighbors are like, but makes it easier for you to understand just how difficult politics are. Some countries, actually have laws requiring people work in the polls, much like the US requires people to serve on juries. I think these are wonderful laws, and help to add legitimacy to an election and changes in government.

Oh yes, if you have worked, I'd be interesting in a post replying where. Obviously working in an election is not limited to Americans. :)

Nah, I'm in California.. no need. There were huge lines here though, the wait went from 30 seconds to like 4 minutes.. which means something with a big old church as the polling place, with lie 45 EVoting machines. No exit polling people though, surprise, surprise. ;)
