Congratulations, Mr. Kerry.
It's been a long and ugly race, filled with personal attacks and sniping as well as politics. Many people, here in America and around the world, have invested time and emotions into the last year of campaigning. You have weathered the firestorm of your detractors, survived one of the most difficult periods in recent American political history, and come out smiling.
I think America has forgotten what politics should be about: the will of the people, and finding the right man for the job. Too often, a campaign is little more than a vicious, drawn-out ordeal of name-calling and mud-slinging. America has forgotten how to look at the merits of a candidate, rather than his flaws.
This is why I have found new respect for you. In the final hour, you remembered your dignity, and the dignity of the Democratic party. To concede is to lose the race, yes, but it is to do so with maturity.
Congratulations, Mr. Kerry. You have my respect.
