For some reason your thread "Direct a question towards the putative owner of a copy of Strunk and White" has been locked before I could post my questions, I wish to direct these (multiple ) questions towards such a person.

I'll asssume you're talking about Elements of Style, and adress my question as such. Is there any significance to the inclusion of the word "putative" in your thread title? There seems to be no reason for your use of the word, would not "possessor" be a better choice if actual ownership is questionable and the technical nature of ownership is not germane to the exposition? It seems that an extraneous side issue has crept into your thread through your use of excessive verbiage, unless the true main point of this thread is upon the nature of the "ownership" of a copy of Elements of Style.

As a seperate issue, the titles of threads referenced in other threads shouod be set off from the text of the post, what is the prefered method of setting off the titles of other threads within a thread? Should Capitalization rules for titles in general be followed in thread titles (viz, should the original thread have been titled "Direct A Question Towards The Putative Owner of A Copy of Strunk and White")? And, finally, although Strunk and White is not the formal title, should it not be written Strunk and White since it is the commonly used title of the work?

Hahahaha!

Well, it's irony isn't it.

One of the major rules of Elements of Style is use the active voice.

Hence, direct a question towards..... is an attempt at parody. And ironic because no-one who had read it would phrase it that way. They would say, Ask.....
