I've been sitting back watching things degenerate for weeks now, and I've got this to say about it.
Shame on the lot of you who used this opportunity to treat your fellow man in the disgraceful way I've seen. Instead of rising above it, the vast majority has gotten right down and wallowed with the worst of them, name-calling, insulting, carrying on like a pack of wild animals rather than any sort of sentient beings might be expected to.
I've watched the forums here display the very worst in human behavior, as well as the mIRC channels, having folks that were oddly enough for the most part getting along fairly well until election day drew closer. Last night as the votes started coming in, I watched it all fall apart, people going so far as to say "I can't be friends with someone who doesn't agree with me." What sort of idiocy is that, I ask you? What, we're not capable in election times to even have a modicum of common decency with folks we don't see eye to eye with? Have we really fallen so far?
I maintained this view before the votes had even started firming up, and I maintain it now: It doesn't matter who wins or who doesn't. Because of our attitudes, our inability to be better people in this surprisingly emotional and obviously controversial time, and on account of how we have been treating each other throughout it, we have already lost, and lost big.
I'm disappointed in a lot of things today, and a lot of people I wouldn't have thought I would be, but I am especially disappointed that once again, my lack of faith in my fellow man has proved valid and that a good lot of you really rose to the occasion in helping cement that cynical view for me.
Thanks, folks. No, really.
And no, I won't be responding to this thread again, so don't think any flaming or nagging or insulting or the like will get me to. And no, I'm not saying 'everyone' is guilty of it - pay attention. I've said my piece, I'm done. Let the character assassination begin, as seems to be usual around here.
