He's winning the popular vote by less than 4 million. Out of over 100 million. That's hardly a mandate.

You wouldn't be doing something incredibly stupid like not accounting for population growth and voter turnout, right?

51% of the vote.

Mandate!

You just have to be a gimmick. I refuse to believe such stupidity acutally exists.

Well, I'm sure he'll interpret it that way...
After all, he considered losing the popular vote a mandate.

On that scale, I'm afraid Natural Choice is a few neutrons short of a stable atomic isotope.

What do neurons have to do with atomic isotopes?!
Neurons are the beacon-thingies in your brain.
The ones that get all clogged-like when you drink too much beer. :)

Seriously, I don't see why you even bother discussing this.
Just go with the flow, there is little else to do about it than to vote.

Neutrons are what differentiate various isotopes. He was making a joke on someone's intelligence, like saying someone is a few hamburgers short of a picnic.

In the netherlands we almost wept (right spelling?) this morning because bush seems to win.... Outside america nobody understands why he receives so many votes. Can someone explain (plain and briefly and simple)?

Because we think Bush is best for America. Or at least, 51% of us do.

It is actually quite hard to explain to Europeans or Canadians why America is so far right compared to your governments.

Not brief, but fairly simple - my long-winded explanation here (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=370594).

Basically, George Bush is overly aggressive and we all know he's not too bright, but he's got strength and a personality - a bad one, but it's there. John Kerry is weak and void of personality. Americans, for all their no-fear bluster, are scared to death of terrorism. Kerry's 'negotiate, not obliterate' tactics are not going to appeal to the cornered-animal mentality of the current US. Kerry would be better in the long run for America's relations with the outside world, but right now they just want a daddy to make the bad man to go away.

That's why they've voted for George W. Bush.

You are correct, though as a % of the vote no Democrat President has received that much in over 30 years.

You guys do realize that not all the votes are in yet, right? If you'd pay attention, they said in a lot of places, it could be up to 10 days before all the absentee ballots are counted. CNN still hasn't called New Mexico, Iowa, or Ohio. New Mexico or Iowa don't matter at all one way or the other, but if Kerry's lucky, he can still win.

Some people have enough money to pay for their own education and healthcare, and they don't give a shit about anyone else's. They vote for Bush for low taxes.

Some people are the kind of christian who wants to deny abortion to people who want it, and wants to deny marriage to gay people. They are willing to skip ove the "thou shalt not kill" part of their religion when it applies to muslims and people in prison. They vote for Bush because he claims to be a christian.

Some people are paranoid. They think the whole world is jealous of america. They think that Europe is a socialist basket case and that people all over the 3rd world are queueing up to destroy Palookaville, ND. They also think than any doubt about is a slur on the brave morons of the US infantry. They vote for Bush because he has wars to feed their paranoia.

Some people love guns. They hate some members of their society and they love the guns they can use to defend themselves from those people, from the government, from imaginary zionists and black panthers, etc. They vote for Bush because he says they can have all the guns they want.

Some people are just dumb, and they vote for Bush because Fox and CNN say so. Dumb people in the US are brought up with the American conviction that even dumb people have a valid point of view. They can get it from the tv and stick to it against all evidence to the contrary.

Of course, I figure 112/300 is, roughly estimated, 37%. You've also got to realize that not all of those 300M are able to vote. That 300M includes people under 18, slaves and African Americans, people in prison, and other non-land-owning white males.

I'm guessing you mean "not stop"?

And the answer is that if you don't give a shit about politics, the difference between bush and kerry isn't enough to encourage you.

Neither of them is going to legalise pot or gay marriage, or outlaw abortion or start free healthcare for all. The difference is really slight when you look at it from the outside. The war in iraq is not changing things for the boyz'n'the'hood.

You might want to factor in the following facts

1) 294 million resident does not equal 294 million citizens(I think there are around 260 mil citizens, not entirely sure though)

2) children dont vote but are still citizens

edit: btw, Ronald Reagan was the last president to receive this high of a percentage of the voting population

Usually voter turnout is the % of people that can vote.
Otherwise I guess my country consists 90% land-owning white males...

Simple reason I think what threw it over the edge is the fact that people got real upset when things like their intelligence and their moral judgment was challenged, we polarized by party lines not by individual thoughts because everyone was attacking everyone else.

Think what happens to people when you directly challenge them and look down on them … they get defensive right? Of their beliefs, actions … thoughts. I mean essentially all this fighting pushed people into two parties and made them stay there … with the republican being the larger of the two.
