If he gets elected President we should secede from the Union!

Yes, if Lincoln is elected we should secede! Oh, wait, that election already happened a long time ago. Didn't they actually secede after Lincoln won? And didn't we then embark on a horrible and bloody war to keep the Union intact which included the disastrous three day combat at Gettysburg and the slaughter at Antietem (The Bloodies Day in American History)? And wasn't every single casualty an American? Didn't that whole "secession" thing lead to such horror and carnage that it's almost impossible to comprehend? I think there's a lesson to learn here.

I don't like Bush. I voted for Kerry purely on the fact that he isn't Bush. I'll be glad if Nader wins, since he is also not Bush. But if Bush wins he is the President, and you damn well better realise that. All this talk of "I'm going to leave the country if Bush is elected!" and "We need to re-write the constitution if Bush wins!" is no different than what the South said when Lincoln was running for President, and you are no more justified than they were.

You might not like Bush, but if he wins then he has won.

Were they not justified? Or was it just that they were beateb that made them unjustified. Was it not what most of the South wanted, is not that democracy, was not what happend dictatorship?
That said in a democracy you have to take the rough with the smooth, if they want to change things then get involved.

Heh, I'm still waiting for all the people to follow-up on the "I'll leave the country if Bush Wins" promises they made in 2000. So I'm not holding my breath. :)

Well, there's no arguing that. I've never claimed I would leave the country, although I consider it for the sake of my own safety. Living in LA and seeing how Bush has only made more people hate us since 9/11, I'm pretty nervous as to who will next crash what where. All I know is that I don't want to be under it, and Bush certainly hasn't made that any less likely.

So what?

The south was perfectly justified to seceed, and I strongly support the right of state secession today. The difference between today and then is that there's no real support for it anymore now that King Lincoln (http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig2/lincoln-arch.html) has set the precedent. The civil war was not the automatic consequence of secession, it was an inexcusable unjust bloodbath waged against those who would dare declare independence. It would probably happen again, except today the federal government has enough firepower in domestic law enforcement alone to quash a state-size rebellion.

Well, technically the South started the war by attacking some fort.

I still mantain we should've just let the South go off on it's own way. Fuck 'em.

Personally, stand by the hope that the classical conservatives will take back the Republican party from the Neo-cons, if they falter in policy more. Leading Bush to clean up some of the mess they have made.
