Theo van Gogh the controversial film director has been assassinated by a gunman in Amsterdam. Amoung his films was a controversial film about Islamic culture called Submission.

Van Gogh, 47, had received death threats after his film Submission was shown on Dutch TV. It portrayed violence against women in Islamic societies. The film was made with liberal Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali refugee who fled an arranged marriage.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali has been under police protection since the film was aired. She has also received death threats and has renounced the Islamic faith.

Eyewitnesses report that Van Gogh was attacked while cycling by a man dressed in a traditional Moroccan jallaba.

Van Gogh - who was related to the famous Dutch painter - had also been making a film about Pim Fortuyn, the populist right-wing, anti-immigration politician assassinated in May 2002.

The film Submission told the story of a Muslim woman forced into an arranged marriage who is abused by her husband and raped by her uncle. It triggered an outcry from Dutch Muslims.

In one scene the film showed an actress in see-through garments with Koranic script written on her body, which also bore whip marks.

It's the religion of peace :sniper:

Just like Christianity had it's moment of peace as well.

Amsterdam is a very liberal country, and much like the liberals here
in America they attack oppossing views with hatred. Of course the
outrage over his film "Submission" came from the Muslim community.

Christianity is historically and dogmatically a violent religion. I'm not surprised when they kill people, but I giggle when the muslims do it and claim their peaceful intentions.

Say what?

If I have read what you said correctly, you are implying that Van Gough hated Islam. So what?

Apparently for some Moslems, people in the West do not have the Freedom of Speech, even in their own countries. Which are NOT subject to Islamic Law.

Sorry kiddo, let me correct you as the Dutch speaker that I am. This attack is seen as something very anti liberal here. 99% of the people here are seeing this as a extreme right religious thing or (we don't know yet) the act of a disturbed mind (lets hope it is that) Extreme bastards with the "B" of Bush.

Sorry to disturb your right wing pro Bush and anti muslim propaganda. But, here, in the free, non US, world, we try to think before condamning.

Oh, yes, this was anti liberalisme more an act that is in favor of the pro Bush and pro Osama part of the world (both serve the same $ agenda).

Try to learn a bit about the world outside the US and in special the Netherlands, your extremist view is not even shared by 0,9% of the population here.

That is why there was a march for peace and tolerance in Amsterdam this night, a march contrary of your extremist white/black views.

I don't think the word liberal even needs to come into play here. You could sum up the sequence of events like this:

Director: "Look what they do to their women!"
Muslims: "How dare you question our faith? ALU AKBAR!" *bang*

It's not Left Wing vs. Right Wing, it's Civilized Nation vs Barbaric Religious Practice. Unfortunately the barbarians reacted with violence, which should not surprise us as much as it apparently does.

That is one of the dumbest arguments I've seen in quite a while. Congratulations.
