I think its just a sign of the times. People stand up for themselves more now than they used to.
Authority used to be, pretty much, obeyed without question, even when I was young (I'm 40 now), and we were taught to do what we were told, without question. Now days, young people are taught to speak up, and question things that they disagree with.
I don't think society is more uptight, its more many different opinions clashing, and voices trying to be heard.
The US is very uptight. It makes no sense whatsoever.
