PS2 or XBOX???

C'mon guys, I really need your help. I've been playing PS2 for 4 years now and I just traded in my old system and 5 crappy games in at EB Games, planning on buying the new PS2 model, but have decided not to because people who bought it were not satisfied due to many technical problems. So here I am with no PS2, 6 good PS2 games, and $150 store credit at EB Games. What should I do? Buy a brand new PS2 or get an XBOX?

Okay, I won't harp the technical superiority of Xbox at you, but I will remind you of a few things.

GTA: SA will be out for Xbox
Halo/Halo 2 will never be out for PS2
Xbox live... no 56k users lagging the game to hell

Reasons to get a X-Box:
1. 4 controller slots
2. Better online program
3. Halo
4. Halo 2
5. Made by Microsoft

Okay, disclude that last one.

PS2 has really good online gaming, SA is supposed to be exclusive (like last time and the time before) and its getting Killzone + MGS3.

Noone gives a sh*t about the gamecube, theres just not enough games for it to be a serious contender.

I'd take secret option C: Gamecube.
Bungeria
02-11-2004, 21:11
The Gamecube is far superior to both the Xbox and the PS2, seriously. All that matter is the quality of the games you can play on the system, not the theoretical maximum performance of the system. And the GC wins that contest every time.

Sure, the Xbox has 3 (soon 4) good games. Sure, the PS2 has 6 games worth spending money on. But look at the GC. Even discounting Zelda and Smash Brothers (which is like discounting Halo, *impossible*) it wins.

I give a shit about the gamecube, and there are more then enough games, and most of them are interesting.

What good games are there on ps2?

HALO VS KILLZONE

That has been the question for a while. In my opinion Killzone is a far better game, and it is only on PS2.

Yes! Secret option 3! The Gamecube! I agree with the "about 6 games worth buying" for the PS2. Although, if you *must* get a PS2 or Xbox, go for the Xbox. Halo-y goodness....

what about the gamecube?

might as well call it lame cube. I had one got one good game (Rogue Leader) the rest were wierd and fruity as hell. It seems most of the games are aimed at young childern too. Not to mention it doesnt have online play; a staple of any good gamesystem(computerinculded). No hard drive, cant play music or dvd. Also, I swear some of the games are so weird they thought up buy poeple on way to much Opium.

Discounting Zelda and Smash Brothers, both of which had better incarnations on the N64 (a must-own system), what good games are there for Gamecube. I'll give you Metroid: Prime and Rouge Squadron.

1) What would you do with the 6 games if you got XBox instead of PS2?
2) When you say "6 good PS2 games," do you mean GTA3, GTA:VC, GTA:SA, and 3 other good games?
3) XBox doesn't get GTA:SA for another 8 months (at least).
4) How many good games on XBox do you know of (much less own)?

catch my drift?

EDIT:
And...building on all of those,
2) First Person Shooters (like Halo, which is apparantly the only reason to get an XBox) is a PC Genre. Console controls just can't beat the good ole mouse and keyboard.
3) In 8 months, when XBox does get GTA:SA, I'll have already beaten it at least once (I'm 48% through on my first play through so far) and I'll already be playing on some good PC FPSs (like America's Army) (or if I feel like playing Halo, I'll break out my Tribes CD).
4) The answer to the question posed in point 4 is "Two. Halo and Halo 2, both of which are complete rips of the PC classic, Tribes."

Just get an x-box and be done with it. (the more time you spend figureing out what you're gonna get the less time you'll have to spend playing!!!)
Halo is fun.
ROTK is fun.
Halo 2 will be fun.
X-BOX IS FUN!!!
'nough said.
(oh, and whoever it was that said N64 is a must own, I so agree!!! Nothing beats smash brothers!)
Oh, and one more thing.... you can watch DVD's on an x-box.
And it's got tons of memory. We haven't even made a dent in our memory.
Opal Isle
02-11-2004, 22:22
What is ROTK and how does any FPS on a console beat FPSs on PC? Therefore, since he obviously already has a PC, he can play his FPSs without getting the XBox, then get the PS2 to play GTA:SA which...heh...Rockstar = revolutionary.

FPS on PC is totaly different to on a xbox.

I was thinking about this when i got my xbox too i used to have a gamecube but a console thats purple ? oh dear thats a kid console.

the xbox has a hard disk and is quicker and better than a ps2, sony has dvd players and shit already out and the dvd player that the ps2 has is rd rate. The xbox is more of a entertainment cener for the bb generation. When you think about it most people only buy ps2 coz they had a ps one and that was good (coz it was) and everyone else is like "if you buy a ps2 i will" and so it all ball most ps2 games are on xbox anyway.

get an xbox just look at the crappy graphics for ps2 xbox has a hard drive and a modded geforce3 graphics card and is alot more powerful, you can tell when a games multiplatform because of the crap graphics because its had to be released on ps2 which drags the quality down on the other consoles, they use double sided polygons and apparantly the dev kit is utter crap, ps2 is showing its age with things like fable and halo 2 coming out you really need to but an xbox, the ps2 can't take these kind of games its like a ps1 but upright.

I'll make it easy for you. If you are a fanboy and like RPGs and other Japanese stuff go with PS2. But if you like games that gear more to the adult gamer in all generes and unbelivable graphics, tons of memory(no memory card needed for entire xbox life) and good online play go with Xbox. If you are a younger gamer or have younger kids go with the gamecube. All in all i would go with an Xbox, i've had one for two years and have never been disapointed, or had a period of time when there wasn't a great game.....and by the way to comment on its size, if a couple inches means that much to you then you must live in a box, it's not heavy and fits EVERYWHERE. So once again I'm a biased Xbox owner but it is a great system.

Well, apparantly, I left to play some kick-ass PS2 games for 30 minutes, and the XBox kids rambled on for 2 pages (probably continueing to ignore my other post). I'm just going to say, if XBox is so great, how come there are so many XBox kids on here posting about how great it is? Because XBox isn't better then NationStates general forum. PS2 clearly is as I've been playing GTA:SA for 7 days straight now. My save file says I've got 50 hours of playing time...I think that speaks for itself...

But anyway, I can stress this enough, the only reason to buy an XBox is Halo. FPSs all suck on console because the control systems suck and the graphics can never match a good PC. You clearly already have a PC, so upgrade it for when you want to play your FPSs and such (I can get you a list of excellent, top-notch PC FPSs) and then get yourself a PS2. Hell, with a PS2 and all three GTA games, you'll be busy for the next 8 months before GTA:SA even comes out on XBox. Besides, we all know that Halo 2 is just an upgraded version of Halo which is just a rip of Tribes which was released on PC in like 97.

By the way, PS2 is just as much of an adult oriented console as XBox is, and some of the great games being listed for XBox have been out on PS2 for a long time (were on PS2 before XBox), and I've noticed that PS2 games have a tendency to go to the "Playstation Classics" list and get re-released and sold for cheaper. I saw MGS2 going for $20 when I picked up GTA:SA...too bad I've had MGS2 since the day I bought my PS2.

It'll stand up on it's own without those blue things...but it takes up essentially no space at all when you consider it can stand up and slide between things (like...on a bookshelf to hold books up if you wanted) or you could set it on your desk and then become a shelf for more stuff to go on top of it.

Do you even know what you talking about?
The Intel PIII in the XBOX outpreforms the Sony PS2 CPU by almost 54% And they are not even the same desing, they share NOTHING in common.
The Win2000 Kernal on the XBOX is much less likely to crash than the Sony 'BIOS" on the PS2.
The XBOX GeForceIII is 34% more powerful than a VoodooIII which the PS2 uses, and it has 3 times as much memory, meaning framrates never drop, Expect in very rare cases.
The Xbox Hard Drive can be used as cache, making games load much faster.
64mb of ram make less loading times.
The PS2 was made with no regard to computer engineering, the XBOX surpasses it and shares nothing in common.

It depends. Do you play with your friends a lot? Or do you like playing online? In that case, get an Xbox or Halo (1&2), it also has some great two-player fighter games, Dead or Alive 3, I lvoe that game..as well as NBA street, and Soul Calibur II is great...

But, if you play alone most of the time, or with just one friend, I recommend a PS2. Great RPGs, racing, non-multiplayer games..

I used to think the Xboz was the worst system, but I decided just a week ago after playing with all three at once that..

1. Xbox
2. Ps2
3. Gamecube

The G5 being the best option and the XBox being the not so good option. My family has all three so I have experience with them. They are all pretty good but if I had to choose only one the G5 would be what I would go for.

Which is a ripoff of Doom which is a ripoff of Wolfenstein. If you want to be an ass about it, every game you play sucks because it's a rip off of an arcade game in the 70s.

Yeah, I'm saying the "this game sucks cuz it's a rip off of blah blah blah" is a poor argument because pretty much every game we play now is just an extension of a game created in the 70s and 80s.

I've always preferred PC games to Consales, although i have PS2 myself.

Gamecube all the way!

My reasons?

Well, first of all the Playstation2 seems awfully unrealiable to me. I can't name one of my PS2-owning friends who hasn't had some trouble with their box. Tis rare to find a year old PS2 that can still play DVDs.

Secondly, I find the Gamecube's controllers much more intuitive and comfortable than the PS2's. After about 1/2 hour of solid gaming on a PS2, my index and ring fingers start to ache, especially on my left hand. After much discussion with me mates, I don't think I'm holding the controller incorrectly, but I might just have weird Nintendo-hands.

Thirdly, the much-underrated games. Metroid Prime (1 & 2), the sublime Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, the Rougue Squadron series, Splinter Cell (designed for the Gamecube), Skies of Arkadia, Mario Cart DD, Resi Evil Zero are all 5-star games. IMO Metroid Prime beats HALO anyday. Whoever said Nintendo was for kids only?

Oh, and if I want to play Microsoft-only games while listening to MP3s, I'll switch on my PC thanks. X-box? Not even a contendor IMO.

None of those are traditional hardcore first person shooter games.
Nor are any of those traditional flying games.

Just spend it on booze, you'll have a lot more fun. Besides, there hasn't been a significant improvement in console games since SNES. Sure, the graphics have gotten fancier, but is Halo really more fun than Super Mario 3 or Donkey Kong? I think not.

Metroid Prime, surley? Or do you mean 'traditional' as in 'real' weapons, shotgun, et all?

What console has a decent flight sim? Stick to a PC if you want that.

Isn't every game?

I never played Tribes, but I have Tribes 2, I always thought it was better than Halo, but at least I have respect for it...
Tribes was actually really, really unique. Never before had an FPS been made in the style of Tribes (with jet packs and whatnot), and I don't see much difference between Halo and Tribes. And even if it isn't a rip off, if you think Tribes 2 is better than Halo, then how can you defend XBox? Tribes 2 was released before XBox even came out (I think)...

Point is, if Halo and Halo 2 are the only reasons to buy an XBox (besides stupid reasons that get overruled by PC like graphics, memory, etcetera), then just go with PC, because then PC beats XBox 10 out of 10 times. I go with PS2/PC combo because GTA is released on Playstation way before XBox, I'm not too particular about a miniscule difference in graphics, the good PS2 games are perfect for console (as opposed to good XBox games that are perfect for PC), and I just saw and advertisement for Killzone...so I don't know what kind of graphics discrepency you guys are talking about. I thought that was a PC game they were advertising.

How do you hurt your left index finger? What the hell? The only part of my body that ever gets worn out (and we're talking about my 6-hour GTA session on Saturday) is usually my back because I don't have a good sitting situation, and sometimes my right thumb. If you're properly holding a PSX or PS2 controller, the thumb is used for everything on top, while the index finders are used for L1 and R1 and the middle fingers for L2 and R2...this would imply that you use L1 excessively.

And speaking about PS2's wearing out...my household has bought 3. We currently have two functional ones (me and my brother) and only bought the third one after my dad accidentilly dropped a duffle bag with a PS2 in it from the top of our SUV to the pavement and broke the PS2. We now have two PS2s that are both about 2 years old and work perfectly. I've only broken one controller...but that was because they don't get crash tested, so throwing it against the wall while playing some game (don't remember what) was the worst idea ever.

Oh, by the way, here is where PS2 comes in handy...a supposed XBox advantage is that it has a harddrive that you can save games too...
The PS2 advantage is that you can take your saved game file to your friends house in your pocket, and you can make copies of it, etcetera.

Are you aware that XBOX has memory cards? Which can hold alot more than PS2 memory cards. And if you have a decent TV you can tell a huge difference between the XBOX and PS2.
And I dropped my gamecube down the non cparted stairs and onto hte nice cement floor and then I played it for 4 hours, It sort of vibrates and loads a bit slower
The Controllers are alot more cofterble and less blocky.

Have you seen how good HALO 2 looks? It blows away anything on the PS2

And actually, a better question is...have you seen GTA:SA? GTA:SA may not have the best graphics, but the fact of the matter is, it's amazing that the graphics are as good as they are when you consider the fact that there is no loading from one end of the map to the other. Only time you get load times is when you go inside buildings. It takes about 5 real time minutes to fly from one side of the map to the other side of the map in the fastest airplane in the game...and there's no loading at all...

el natcho what did you do in the end ?

I too wanna know.

Personnally, I won't give up my PS2. I would've bought the new system (if I didn't hear of the problems that is ) then make the decision. but I've tried some XBOX games and I've herd of the XBOX crashing (one of my friends owns a store that repairs platform games. and he was amazed at the number of XBOX's that came in needing repairs for faulty hard drives and such.)

I've also tried the GameCube (not impressed), own a DreamCast (sorry to see them stop supporting this unit), PS1 (Tiny little f***ker!) and PSX, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, SuperFamicom, NES, Atari 2600... hold on... I think I finally found the cause of my lack of cash...

As for older PS2's not working? I've never experienced that problem. although someone told me you need to put the PS2 in a sleep state then power off and that will reduce the wear and tear by alot. so I've done that repeatedly then I gave up and leave it in a wait state until I play it again. So far, no problems.

also, if you did by an XBOX, which six PS2 games do you still own... and what will you do with it.
