All this time I assumed he was moderately left. This is surprising.

This is about right if you're looking at American politics from the view of a socialist.

Not to me - I've seen this before

If it was from a socialist's viewpoint Cobb and Nader would also be on the right. That chart is from an international perspective. US politics are just more right-wing than most other places.

I was surprised to see Peroutka near General Pinochet's place!

Yeah, pretty much all American politicians are inherently right-wing. Didn't know that? Well, you learn something new every day.

That's America. We only DO "rightists".

Sure. But he's still right wing authoritarian, whereas he's frequently portrayed as very left wing. I saw this a long time ago, and wasn't surprised then. Yeah... all American politics is right-wing becaus3e we're still afraid of commies.

It depends on where you put the center... He's at the left of the far right (or he's on the left for an American) but to someone normal he's centre right or classical right depending on the issues.

Kerry isnt moderate right, ist just right. Not extreme but also not moderate.
But in american politics its not so clearly, because both, democrates and republicans are right. Other countrys, such as germany have a very thin line between left and right, because there only partys of the middle.(well, if you think of the partys with POWER) English and France have a better definied line, because in their historys thei hadn´t an extrem left AND right government. Germany btw did (DDR and third Reich)

The US is more right leaning than other countries for several reasons. The first goes back to our national heritage.

The US was founded in a Conservative Democratic Revolution, in which members of all economic groups banded together underneath a bunch of landowners. Because of the conservative nature of the American Revolution, virtually none of the ensuing chaos that traditionally follows revolutions occured here, and the people were collectively grateful in a cultural manner that exists till today.

The US Constitution is a fairly conservative-libertarian document, which restricted the power of the federal government, and ensured the rights of the states and the individuals.

The US instituted successful progressive reforms in the early part of the century, so much so as to basically quiet the socialists. The three main progressives (in my opine) were T. Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and F. Roosevelt. After all, FDR once said "I'm that kind of liberal because I'm that kind of conservative"

Our national culture is a do it yourself culture. We have always valued individual responsibility over collective security.

The cold war had us being diametrically opposed to the communist powers, and socialist (therefore populist/leftist) governments. In the end we won by a huge margin (didn't even shoot a single russian), but having our enemies to the left was a massive motivator to us Americans to drift to the right.

America is more religious than everyone else, chiefly because of our conservatism. This is a self feeding phenomenon. so yeah.

John Kerry won't just take a stand on the tough issues – he'll take two or three of them!

um...that's not what we're discussing. I'm not arguing for or against kerry here even though I have a distict view on who I want in office. Take that to another thread.

I guess although Kerry is a bit on the left for American standards, he's still right wing on international standards. Am i right in suggesting this?

I would agree. But compared to Bush there is a sizable difference, I think more than this graph shows.

Thats a recent development. Even up until the mid 90s, labour was a trade unionist/ socialist party. That all got fucked up with new-labour those coniving sell out dickheads
