Allegations of cheating in Ukrainian elections

Poll fury in Ukraine parliament

KIEV, Ukraine (Reuters) -- Ukraine's opposition Tuesday accused Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych and his allies of wholesale cheating in a landmark presidential election, foreshadowing a bitter run-off battle later this month.

*snip*

With returns from Sunday's first round nearly complete, Yanukovych, an advocate of closer ties with Russia and endorsed by Moscow, leads Yushchenko, West-leaning standard-bearer of liberals, by less than a percentage point.

The election is seen by many as a defining moment in the post-Soviet development of the country of 47 million that lies at the hub of Europe. But apparently dubious procedures observed by monitors on Sunday have raised eyebrows in the West.

The outcome will determine the extent to which Ukraine tilts towards its former master in Moscow or follows liberal reforms pursued by European Union new members on its borders.

There is no Democracy in Eastern Europe none whatsoever....you people need to get that rubbish out of your head and accept the reality. Putin and Moscow run everything in that region just as the soviets did in the USSR days.

I must admit I find the general attitude and incompetence of the Ukrainian govt amusing. They try to assasinate the opposition candidate twice and fail; rig the election but find him still winning; have some election comittee members admit it was rigged; then ignore the results and say Yanukovich is winning

It is true that Putin has reasserted some authority in Eastern Europe, but this is the determining factor for Ukraine. If the opposition wins, Russia will loose any hope of regaining the Ukraine during Yushchenko's term, without a very ugly confrontation with the West. If he wins, I think this may change the dynamic of the region.
