Dead Voters?

Fitting story for the day of the dead (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=816&ncid=816&e=1&u=/ap/20041101/ap_on_el_ge/dead_voters), this may be one of those things that everyone's screaming about come November third. What I found most interesting about this story is the family of the woman in the photo just about admit to their intention to commit voter fraud. The woman's dead, she sent in her absentee ballot just before she died, yet her daughter, who photocopied her ballot and obviously knows, and apparently approves, of how she voted, says she's "in no hurry" to notify the registrar of voters of the womans death. Is this right? People who die before the election are not supposed to be counted, even if they sent in absentee ballots. Laws state that only those eligible to vote on election day can be counted. Death does disqualify you.

Define 'death'. :)We'll keep it simple and beurocratic, how about being issued a death certificate as the definition of being dead? ;)

Ok, it's a mess and everything, and the daughter that you and the article refers to is not acting honestly, but is there a specific law that requires ex-parties to take steps to inform officials of voter irregularities? If not, then I cant see how it can be construed as voter-fraud from any legal point of veiw.

dunno, My friend showed me the voter regestration card for his grandmother who died 4 years earlier... every year after her death a voter's registration card with her name, declairing her a Democrat (before she died, she was a hard core Republican.) which goes to show that people are Dying to become Democrats.

Funny thing tho, when the newspapers started investigating Voter Fraud among the elected officials, the cards stopped coming... of course no fraud was ever found.

Ah. Arbitrary value. Like linear time. Okay, I'll give you that.

But tell me this then: Whose responsibility is it to inform registrars of the person's death? WHo is committing the fraud?

WHo is committing the fraud?I never said anyone was committing fraud, note my choice of words, I said "just about admit to committing...". They know she's dead and know her vote shouldn't be counted, even if they're not technically breaking any laws, they know what they're doing and that it's not right. I'm not really sure the requirements for notification. That's one of the inconsistancies that is gonna cause a ruckus, different states and even different counties have different requirements and checks for this type of thing. Some are lax and were probably gonna have the votes of a lot of dead people counted. With over 200 registered voters kicking the bucket every day in florida, considering the margin of victory in the last presidential election this could be significant. I don't think this will be the last we hear about this.
