What's your favorite metal?

Metal as in music.

I'm making this thread simply because I'm getting tired of bush bush bush kerry kerry ask a jew ask a jew threads. And I like metal

Okay, so list your top ten favorite metal bands (if you don't have ten don't worry, jsut post 'em anyway). And then maybe say what kind of metal is your favorite (death, thrash, power, doom, etc.)

Alright some guidlines

1. This is NOT a thread where you criticize each others music taste. If you hate a band, it doesn't matter. People are gonna like what they're gonna like. And if you hate metal music, then simply don't post, that's it. I don't care

2. There is a difference between death metal, and dark metal. Quite a bit actually. However, dark metal, and black metal are (in my opinion) the same thing, only different degrees of "evil".

3. Just because they don't have uber fast, chunky guitar riffs doesn't discount them. Things like Led Zepplin and...*sigh* KISS do count, because without these bands, there would probably not be metal as we know it today. And Black Sabbath is of course traditional metal, not doom metal, so put that to rest right now.

4. Please, if it's a band, give a web address so we can check them out. If they don't have one...welll...then that sucks for me I guess.

5. Opeth, and Otep are very different, but the names get confused alot. Opeth is a rather excellent Swedish prog/death metal band. Otep is Nu-Metal from L.A.

Anyway, that's about it. But what's my list you ask!?

1. Children of Bodom - actually tied with second
2. Vader - Polish death!
3. Opeth - one listed above
4. Gorgoroth - uhhh...heheh
5. Shadow's Fall
6. Bathory - should have listed it earlier. Quorthon started it all
7. Iron Maiden - again, shoulda listed earlier
8. Led Zepplin - ditto
9. Darkthrone - got me hooked
10. Behemoth - my three favorite polish bands combined!

Anyway, if you can't tell, I prefer death metal, and dark metal

Yeah...sooo...go!

Haha - funny story, my ex-girlfriend claimed to be the most serious metalhead ever, claiming to like all those bands and then had a go at me for playing Rammstein because it was 'too heavy'. Just thought I'd share that with someone who'll appreciate the level of fakery involved there.

I like Rammstein for what they are, but they're closer to Industrial than real Metal - but I like them because they fit nicely in the middle of those two, my two favourite genres.

Then again I shouldn't hold it against her - extreme metal is a very male thing to be into, and I've only met one girl who was into it and man, was she scary - used to laugh maniacally at 'Faces of Death' gore vids...

Yeah, heavy metal, like I'm into is for people who are always pissed off. I like Rammstein. I don't listen to them much anymore, but only because I'm listening to alot of Vader. I was in a band (we had only one gig, and that was for the school arts fest, it rocked) and we played some death metal covers, and we had a growler who was a chick.

Rammstein went a bit crap with Mutter and their new one, but Sensucht was a brilliant (and very creepy if you speak German) album. It's a shame they sold out with what are essentially all love songs on Mutter.

My 'band' have played 3 gigs in total, never with the same lineup of guitarists, drummer and bassist - me (growler), keyboard player and NTU operator are the 'core team', the rest are just people who tag along. All our gigs were at my old school, but they were pretty cool. Couple of hundred people thought we ruled. Result.

Well, I've always took to:

Dimmu Borgir,
Phallicide,
Black Dahlia Murder,
Children of Bodom,
In Flames,
Old Man's Child,
Rhapsody...

I have no favorite type of "Metal", the ideal of seggregating the music one likes into cliques is harrowing...not to mention, it's usually broken down into this argument: "Omegosh! You listen to Death Metal and not (insert another genre)?! You are like...omegosh! So not Metal!"

1. Candlemass

3. Electric Wizard
4. Black Sabbath
5. Saint Vitus
6. Trouble
7. Aura Noir
8. Celtic Frost
9. Sadistik Exekution
10. Bathory

Yeah, a few new ones mixed with the classics. Actually apart from Electric and cathedral they're all fairly old. I'd say my choice of metal is Doom- traditional, stoner whatever it rules. Oh and i'd like to mention:

11. Dream Theater

As a kind of bonus choice, seeing as they rule all ass.

Aww, hey whats with all this growl (well not all of it but most...)?

How about some power metal? ;)

No, I am not gay, but I do like swords and dragons, elves... etc.. And shredding guitarists, ;) always a big +, heh, well okay a little list then;

Yngwie Malmsteen (Yngve Malmsten), the swedish MONSTER GUITAR GOD! The mightiest among the mighty! A top notch shredder, www.yngwie.org

DragonForce, a multinational UK based extreme power/speed band, Herman Li and Sam Totman two amazing shredder guitarists, just so... f*cking good, www.dragonforce.com

Rhapsody, masters of epic symphonic metal, you either hate or love them

Domine, take some Maiden and mix it with power, and there you go, 80´s epic heavy metal ;) www.mightyrhapsody.com

Stratovarius, finnish power at its best, ^^

Hammerfall, swedish heavy metal,

Dimmu Borgir, black is it? I like them although I am not totally into that "RRraaaaawwrrrr!" thingy, ;)

Iron Maiden, the best of the NWBHM(New wave of brittish heavy metal) era,

Saxon, also a very good band from the NWBHM era,

Dio,
Sabbath,
Rainbow,
Deep Purple,
Gary Moore,
Rusty Cooley,

And of course, Turisas, www.turisas.com a band I just recently found, plays some kind of folk/battle metal, I am usually NOT into folk metal but the cover of the cd looked nice so...

There are alot more, I just cant be arsed to write them all,

yeah..

Isolate Francium and drop that into water. theoretically, it should react more vigorously than caesium with water. Also the least electronegative element, so fairly reactive all round

Isolated Sodium has the same type of reaction.

In highschool, my chemlab had a block (6 lbs) of sodium that was almost to it's "expiration date" for use in the class room. My teacher at the time, after ordering a replacement, decided that he would give us all a lesson in chemistry that we would never forget. Behind the school, out back of the fields and parking lots, was a creek with a very small pond in it.

I bet you can see where this is going, don't skip ahead ;).

Anyway, he drags us all outside, and gives us a lecture on the reactionary properties of the metal, has us back away, and tosses it (from about 10 feet away) into the pond.

Unfortunately, he didn't quite get it all the way into the water like he intended (which would have just caused a big fountain like splash), and instead hit the shallow edge. So, instead of a big water splash and a second shower for the day, the entire class got a mud splash.

To this day there is still a ~15' diameter crater back there.

That was the best class ever.

Yeah, it's the same type of reaction, but reactivity with water increases as you go down group 1 i.e. Na has a faster reaction than Li, K than Na, Rb than K, Cs than Rb and Fr than Cs. So you get a much more violent reaction with the lower group 1 metals.

1/2 a tonne of Rb would probably go some way to blowing up the swimming pool
