I think there is a very high chance. I mean there are a lot of white people located in the south(and north west) who will probably never stand for America having a black leader and as a result one of them will get the idea to shot the newly elected leader at a political rally or something. What do you guys think?

I think attempts will certainly be made, but as to whether or not they succeed is another matter altogether. The Secret Service has done a pretty good job with keeping Presidents alive for the 40 years since Kennedy, and there hasn't been a close attempt since Reagan. They're good at what they do.

An attempt? Definitely. Will it succeed? Probably not. Like Incertonia said, the Secret Service has a lot of resources to make sure it doesn't happen.

This is just from my experience here in Scotland but most racists are either stupid old people or neds (10-29 troublemakers who act tough and pick on people weaker than them). I don't think any of em would have the ability or the guts to do somthing like that.Its probably different over in USA though.

Not too long, but I hardly think that's analogous to a president being elected from a group which has traditionally been oppressed, considering that a white president in one of these countries would represent a long history of oppression of the majority by rich white countries, just as rich white presidents in the United States might represent exactly the same thing as far as a black man is concerned. Now, there's certainly more black people in the Congo or Nigeria then white people, but numbers are hardly important because it takes a handful of people to carry out an assassination (And I'm pretty sure the majority didn't hate Kennedy). Sure, there are angry white folk in the US, but there are angry black folk in the US too. Why is one group more likely to kill a president of a certain race than the other group?

And yes, I'm sure that he will probably be assasinated. You cannot have perfect protection no matter what. There will be openings, and someone will use them. However, I think it would be great if the first black President was a Republican. Then they would probably not be shot. Just my two cents.

They're younger here, but not in high regard by most people in the US. The main difference, of course, is that it's not just whites over here that are rascist. There are a few black rascist groups as well, most famously, the MOVE group back in the eighties.

Rather, since racism exists, this black president will have to be extra charismatic to be elected, and the most charismatic presidents, historically, are the ones that people try to assassinate. I mean, look at Reagan - he won landslide numbers of electoral votes for both his terms, it's not like he was unpopular.

Look at the last assainations and attempts. We're talking ex-military fanatics usually who strongly disagree with something a president has done or exemplifies, but also believes it has made a personal difference in their lives. What most people disagree with Bush about is making differences overseas (correctly or no).

As to a black president ... I was seriously hoping Colin Powell would run, when was it, in '96 or '00? He was considering it, but came on the news saying he'd received too many threats to his own life, but more importantly to the lives of his family members and decided not to run.

Personally, I hope they run Rice in '08 ... especially if it's against Hillary. Whether the repubs win or lose, that'd be a major feather in their cap.

I think its a laughable assumption. Perhaps there will be an assination threat but certainly not due to race. People like to believe they are still living in "better times" but in reality the old predjudices are probably gone for good, awaiting to be replaced by new ones.

Actually there will probably by a Black VP before there is ever a Black president. That will be a whole other tangle of problems, there's the old joke about black's standing in line to take a shot at the president if that ever happens. The simple solution of course is if ever a black develops the base to contend for president, his running mate should also be black, then simply killing the president because of his color would be pointless, his successor would also be black.

I don't know. I mean there have been some unpopular/there are some unpopular presidents. Realisticly a black man-cos there is no hope in hell for a black woman(it would be very cool if a black woman ran) won't get elected for a while maybe 20 years.
