In order to be a Republican today: (very very short version)

You have to believe that Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy did war on him, a good guy when Dick Cheney did business with him, and a bad guy when Bush needed a "I cant find Osama" diversion.

You must understand that Americans never viewed Saddam as a "good" guy. We just helped him at times because Saddam was at war with Iran(which was anti-american at the time of the cold war which wasnt a good position to be in) also Saddam was battling Islamic fundamentalists inside Iraq as well as in foreign countries that he invaded(so you see the way America thought was that we should help Saddam at that time because in that certain situation he is the lesser of two evils) besides America wasnt the only country to arm Iraq. France, USSR, and post-USSR Russia did the same thing as well.

Well, if the USSR was arming Iraq during the Cold War, shouldn't we have been on the opposite side? But no, Iran was our enemy too. Maybe we should have just kept our fat asses out of it.

I guess they feared the spread of fundamentalism in the middle east more than socialism.

Well the USSR and US didnt arm Iraq at the same time.

Yeah they did. Iraq received its MiG-29 fighters, for example, during the Iran-Iraq war, the same time the US was providing aid to them.

Yeah, I know. But the general point that maybe we should have stayed the hell away is still pretty valid.

Well the USSR was doing more of its Iraq arming when we were allies with the Shah in Iran than later on.

Yeah, more of it, but the USSR never fully cut off Iraq despite its new ties with the west.
