My family is weird.

Here's the deal. I'm going to list members of my immediate family, their relationship to homophobia, and their views on gay marriage. Then you can discuss how weird it is.

--------

My Dad- Not homophobic at all, opposed to gay marriage and civil unions.

My Mom- Mildly homophobic, opposed to gay marriage and civil unions.

Me- Not homophobic at all, support civil unions and/or gay marriage.

My Brother- Extremely homophobic, supports civil unions, but not gay marriage.

My Sister- Mildly homophobic, supports civil unions and/or gay marriage.

--------

The only strong trend that I notice here is that the younger folks are more likely to support civil unions or gay marriage. So is there really a strong relationship between homophobia and opposition to gay marriage? Based on my small sample it would appear that there is not.

Depends what you mean by homophobia. Do you mean they hate gay people, or just that they don't like it?

For the purpose of this study I defined homophobia as "an aversion to homosexuals and/or homosexuality."

I'd say that your family is too small a sample to be indicative, but also that the reasons given by each member for their views would be helpful in determining.

Are they affraid to be touched by gays?
Do they like watching gays make out?
Do you?

I would not be surprised that married couples have more of a problem with gay marriage than unmarried people. Makes sense kinda...

That's not a good indicator. Although I don't like smoking, I think it should be allowed. I don't like drinking, but I think it should be allowed. I don't like homosexual marriages, and don't think they should be allowed. I like getting money for nothing, I think stealing should be allowed. There's more factors involved in a decision than liking something.

Shhh...you're stealing my thunder, dammit.

I'm sure that there are many families out there who are just like yours and that may be weird by opinion, but that doesn't make it rare. I think that rarity is more important than logic.

Not really. Would like to elaborate?

Okay...

Has even ONE of them ever even KNOWN a gay man/woman personally? Cuz seriously, I have had a lot of homophobic friends in my life, and the minute they actually met a real-life gay person, the feeling just dissapears.

Get out there. Meet some. If everybody just knew ONE gay person, almost everyone would support gay marriage.

All of the members of my family have known several gay persons. This has not seemed to effect some of their beliefs.

The younger generation (like me) does seem to lean towards gay rights.. although "fag" is still a widely used derogatory term. But I live in New England so things may be bit different here than in other parts of the country...

That's what the polls of age groups show--the younger the demographic, the more tolerant/pro-gay rights they are, across the board.
