Two decades ago the MPAA tried t oprevent sony from manufacturing the beta max player. Their argument was that this would destroy the motion picture industry. The supreme court ruled in Sony's favor and the beta max went to market. Did the movie industry crumble under the wave of piracy that the beta max was most surely to create? The answer is no, instead the movie industry adapted and they soon discovered that movie rentals were a lucrative business. Now the MPAA and the RIAA are trying to shut down filesharing programs like Kazaa, Grokster, and Morpheus. Instead of trying to adapt as they did in the 80's they're using lawsuits and lobbying to manipulate the government to pass laws in their favor. Even if the RIAA and MPAA succeded in shutting down filesharing companys, open source apps like eDonkey, and Bit Torrent would flourish in their place.
