I already see four on the first page... please don't begin any others until these die their (un)natural deaths.

They are: Ask a Jew, Ask a Vegan Vegetarian, Ask an Angry Young Man, and Ask a Young Gay Man.

Thanks.

Actually I think the 'ask a' threads are the most interesting of the forum. You can really learn something there.

Now I wouldn't say that. It wasn't that bad...was it?
let's just ask a ask a thread starter...

The reason I am asking folks to be kind and not post more until these have died is because during the recent spate of them, the moderation team got MANY "OMG there are too many ASK A threads, they are shoving everything else off the front page, and they are all copycatting off each other!!!!!11111" complaints.

perhaps a new catagory... an Ask a ... catagory where all of these wise people can go and spread their intellect with the uneducated masses.

Tha'd be nice. A whole new forum dedicated to seperate groups of people and religons.

And perhaps sub-forums or threads that take place of the "Ask a...." threads...

Just don't let the ask a threads take over again or they'll all be locked. Seriously, when anything gets spammy, it's gone too far.

why is this sticky
Klonor
31-10-2004, 21:07
Because the Mods want people to know that they don't want the 'Ask a.....' threads to take over, and if it's not a sticky then it will fall off the front page quite quickly.

A hypotetical question: let's say that I complained to the mods about my Ask a... threads being pushed down for an incessant rambling about nazi-republicans and communist-democrats. Those threads ought to be really nasty, they are full of trolling, flaming and un-intulectual posts. Would you then put up a sticky saying: no more politics thank you?

The few deeper threads I have participated in were automatically pushed down by the classical threads "euroweenies vs. ignorant republicans". Why is that?

And how come ALL (yes ALL, so far no one has defended them) mods ban and lock those Ask a... threads for being non-serious, you allow that chatting-thread and every political/religious thread that gets out of topic...
Is there some kind of agreement you have that all mods have to have exactly the same interests and values (I'd lock pointless, patriotic sport threads if I was able to, but since they are allowed I ain't never becoming a mod or what?) about what is worth of discussing?

I was thinking of having a 'ask an ignorant' thread.

unless you're being sarcastic (highly probable, as I have come to learn in my brief span ont' forums) that's 'ask an ignoramus'. Ignorant is a verb, ignoramus is a noun. Of course, I'm probably making an arse of myself here. I think I must have Asperges, cuz I can't always tell when people are telling a joke unless its quite obvious

All mods do not lock Ask a Threads. If you were paying attention (clearly not) I asked people not to start new ones until the four I saw on the front page had given up the ghost. Unfree also said that unless they began to take over, Ask a Threads would not be locked.

Do they sometimes become flamefests and get locked? Yes. But so do the political ones, the role play ones, and the silly ones.

Are we going to lock political threads? Yes, if they get flamey, and people get warnings and deletions for repeated flaming. Check out moderation for all the complaints about that.

Are we going to declare a moratorium on political threads on a site for a political game? Uh, come on, does that make sense?

Do we take action against chat threads? Um, perhaps you've missed people complaining about chat threads being placed in Jolt's spam forum when they get to above 1300 posts?

Believe me, we're not picking on anyone. The sad fact is that when one person gets a clever idea (Ask a....) suddenly everyone feels the need to get into the act. This is unfair to everyone else if they take over.

Oh, I'd just like the Mods to know that I do plan on bumping my Ask a Jew thread (Which has been accused of starting the 'Ask a.....' plague in the first place and restarting it recently) in a week or two. This is because I'd like new players who have joined after it died this time to have the option to ask questions.

But when you asked people to not post there was probably at least one:
OOT political thread, with the same kind of substance and
at least one (say 5) thread(s) with flaming about the US election.
Can you tell me a mod who has spoken FOR the Ask a... threads? All I know is that no one opposes Myrth's endless locking-rampage...

Do they sometimes become flamefests and get locked? Yes. But so do the political ones, the role play ones, and the silly ones.
Sure, but mods also lock threads for being non-serious, then what about "Is homosexuality a sin?"? The only thing that isn't repeated can be found on the first two or three pages, the rest is anti-christians trolling and bible quotes.

Are we going to lock political threads? Yes, if they get flamey, and people get warnings and deletions for repeated flaming. Check out moderation for all the complaints about that.
Ok, I just feel that mods rather lock a thread they don't like from the beginning than a political one.

Are we going to declare a moratorium on political threads on a site for a political game? Uh, come on, does that make sense?
1.
... political GAME...
2. The name of this forum is GENERAL, check it out if you doubt it.:P

Yes I have, and I can see nothing wrong with it, those threads aren't actually making the forum go smother...

Believe me, we're not picking on anyone. The sad fact is that when one person gets a clever idea (Ask a....) suddenly everyone feels the need to get into the act. This is unfair to everyone else if they take over.
Finally something I can agree with.
But you have to make a differance between serious and non-serious Ask a... threads, I have learnt a lot from the Ask a... threads by jews, catolics, satanists, anarchists, communists, you name it. They are simply good for asking questions you would never have the chance to ask people. Other threads are plain chat-threads, and if you'd like to ban them from the forum then make it official and I won't complain.

I agree with this, granted it can get outta hand but making it a seperate catagory can actually work for NATIONSTATES by giving people an insite into how others think and feel. Learing about different religions and cultures while "Playing a game"

granted the Flamebaiters will be practicing their trade skills but I think the information gleened will be greater.

IMHO.
