The State Duma, dominated by the Kremlin-backed United Russia party, voted 365-64 to abolish the direct election of regional governors — one of several reforms that Putin says are necessary to strengthen the state against the threat of terrorism.

Talk about stepping away from democracy and back towards Communism. Remember people, Putin was a former KGB spy... looks like he liked a few things from the old system a little too much.

I can just only sigh in exasperation in the general direction the world is going. We're all going backwards. Conservatives, fascists, neoNazis, radicals taking power everywhere. This election is hugely crucial.

Actually, you have it wrong, it's fascism, not communism. The parties which merged to make up the current block were Fatherland All Russia, Union of Right Forces, and Unity. Sound communist to you? No, the real communists in the Duma were wrecked in the elections. This is a right wing authoritarian antidote to the libertarianism of the recent past.

Sooner or later, Russia will pre-emptively strike against countries just like the Americans did. And then China and then India and then France and Germany and the UK etc. Unless those countries are led by politicians who are not as dumb as Bush is. Though I have some reservations about Putin - he scares me.
