I used to occassionally indulge myself with a Cadbury's 'Premium Dark' bar, but they've re-jigged the recipe so it's nearly twice as sugary as it was just a few months ago. There was also this...rancid aftertaste that I couldn't quite place. A total turn-off.
It wasn't until someone offered me a Hershey bar that I twigged to the deal- that rancid taste is milk, or milk products. I couldn't finish that Hershey's bar, man. It even had a slightly ripe smell to it, kinda like cheese. Blechh.
Now I've been sampling some of the imported chocolate like Lindt (70% cocoa), and although it gives me the theobromide kick I need on these short, dark days, I wish I could still buy a national brand rather than buy imports.
I guess I'm wondering if anyone else out there likes the dark chocolate the way I do, and what North American brands you might recommend to me. And if you think I'm wrong (or right) about the inherent stinkyness of milk chocolate, speak yer mind.
This isn't about 'candy bars', this is about chocolate (yum).

Ahh...dark choclate. I can't stand Cadbury, and love Hershey. Those "fun size" (Although I see nothing fun with that small size!) dark choclate bars are sooo good. :D

A lot of people like Russel Stover. That's domestic. But OTOH, a lot o people laugh at it too (I'm not sure why its won several competitions recently).

I am particularly addicted to Godiva's dark chocolate bars -- they are rich and especially sinful when paired with raspberry filling, in my not so humble opinion.
Ghirardelli is also a domestic brand (it's produced in California) and is pretty good.
If you are anywhere near NYC, I would suggest combing the web for mentions of "The Chocolate Show" -- an annual convention which brings chocolate from around the GLOBE. ;)
Not that, like, I would GO or anything.... er....

i'm no expert but I like Dove's Dark Chocolates... I just let em melt in my mouth... mmmmm...
scuse me, I know I have a few pieces hidden in my desk....
I have to say I had a Hershey bar once and thought it was foul what do they put in there? I also love dark chocolate and lint 85% is great (if a little strong). If you want good milk chocolate, milka is great but you can only seem to get it on the europen main land.

Hersheys? I had a bag of milk chocolate eggs for Easter from America, and I have to say, it was the WORST chocolate I ever had. When you put it in your mouth it sort of tasted alright, but there was something strange about it. After that it tasted like vomit slightly, then gave an aftertaste of... well, vomit really
*finds and unraps odd lump of tinfoil*
I had another Truffle... mmmm Truffles... oh yeah, better than Doves any day.

White chocolate? Bleeeeuch. It's just cocoa-fat and sugar. Sickly-sweet, cloying, narsty in the extreme. The McDeadthings milkshake of the chocolate world.

With a wife and four daughters, having a supply of chocolate around is probably the only thing standing between me and an untimely death for several days each month. Girrardelli's, Dove and Cadbury's are my weapons of survival.

I dunno where you guys get Cadbury chocolate from, but it tastes and smells just fine for me (UK).
And if you've never tried it before, I strongly recommend Nestle Double Cream.

Dark chocolate rocks. My nephew worked at Godiva (http://www.godiva.com/godivaCollection/chocolate_guide.asp) and got free chocolate.
