Does anyone else hate the Red Sox.

I'm not a Yankee fan and I'm not a Cardinal fan, but I despise the Red Sox. People are always quick to rip on the Yankees for spending so much and pretty much taking everything that makes baseball great out of baseball. But can anyone explain to me why the Red Sox are any better? Because they never won the World Series? At least the Yankees got something for their overspending.

Look at it this way, at least with the Yankees you can say they've always had a few fan favorites that they were loyal to, like Jeter, Bernie Williams, and Mariano Rivera. But who do you associate with the Red Sox? Pedro Martinez, the second biggest free agent signing in history? Manny Ramirez, a cocky underachiever who was also a huge free agent signing? Or how about the dozen stars they raided off of small market teams like Damon, Cabrera, Ortiz, or Foulke.

Maybe they beat the curse, but they still haven't earned it.

The difference between the Yankees' payroll and the Red Sox's payroll is greater than the difference between the Red Sox's payroll and the Devil Rays' payroll (smallest in the league). The Yankees vastly outspend every other team in the league and are the biggest reason why small market clubs are continuously in the basement.

And most of Red Sox Nation is loyal to the team, not to the players. Plus, we've got guys like Nixon, who came up in the system, or Varitek and Lowe, who've been with the team. And then there was Garciaparra. Take Jeter or Rivera out of it, and the Yankees are no better.

What about Varitek and Nixon, eh?

There are some people that can never give New England any credit whatsoever. These are the same people who will rip on the Patriots when they win yet another Super Bowl. I don't understand why so many people hate everything New England.

People trash the Yankees because they 'buy' ALL of their players. If you look around, the Yankees have produced a lot of good talent players, Mike Lowell, Alfonso Soriano, Andy Pettitte, Al Lieter, Jorge Posada, Bernie Williams, Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter... But the Yankees buy all their players. my ass they do

They made a deal before this year to bring in Magglio Ordonez, effectively replacing Nixon, they also tried to get rid of Nomar in that same deal. If you wanna brag about how they've held on to their 8th best position player and their 4th best pitcher go ahead, they still bought their team.

I am in no way saying the Yankees are any better, I am saying that they are no worse, both of the teams are effectively ruining baseball.

The Red Sox have the second highest payroll in the majors by 30 million, they trail the Yankees by about 45 million. The Red Sox spend more than the Indians, Pirates, Devil Rays and Brewers combined.

And I love the Patriots, best team in football, and will probably win the Super Bowl again. I think they exemplify what is good about football and sports in general, a team building from the ground up, relying on teamwork, coaching, and fundamentals instead of star power.

How much of these qualities do the Red Sox exhibit?

I personally was happy that the Red Sox won. I thought it was cool that they won the World Series in so many years. The Yankees have had the glory plenty of times, give a team who hasn't had much glory some time in the spotlight for a change.

I don't hate the Red Sox. I'm a Cubs fans so I was incredibly happy that they won (I cheer for the Cubs and anyone who plays the Cards). They beat my two most hated teams in back-to-back series by doing so. So I don't hate them. The Red Sox and Yankees both get something from thier overpending, whereas the Tribune Corp. (owners of the Cubs) finally shelled out a little cash and we still didn't make October.

Oh please.
Look, I like them because they beat the Yankees. And they have a comparatively *tiny* payroll. And they did win the World Series before, in 1918. Research a little thing called "the Curse of the Bambino." Now, Lowe is quite possibly one of the best pitchers in the league. Also, he will probably be leaving the team after this season. If I were you, I'd bet money that the Yankees pick him up.

By the way, don't talk baseball if you really don't know what is going on. You seem to be trying to say that the Red Sox are no different from the Yankees. I can assure you, there is a huge difference. And Ortiz is not being paid half as much as Jeter, even though he batted an impressive .467 or so in the playoffs through the end of the Series, if I'm not mistaken. So die ;).

By the way, I'm a Braves fan :). Dammit, we died hard this year. Screw the Cardinals.

I am actually a fan of several smaller market teams such as Toronto, Seattle and Minnesota but I am glad Boston won. The Yankees are more of a threat to baseball given the fact they can go get a former Cy Young candidate in Esteban Loiza (spelling may be worng) and put him in the bullpen. Nows thats crude. Also, I don't feel bad Minnesota lost Ortiz, we couldn't afford him or that Oakland lost Foulke (I despise Oakland in so many ways) and Cabrera from Montreal, well Canada ignored Montreal and only ever paid attention to them when they were in the Wild Card race last year and so with the team having no money and moving, it was gonna be hard to keep a good player like Cabrera. No, Boston has rightfully earned the World Series and even if you don't like them, you should never say "They didn't earn it" because if you follow that rule, hardly any team has ever deserved it. Also, building a team up from the ground is a slow, boring, frustrating painful process and if you've got the money to not have to do that, why not. I'm gonna be cheering for 2 rebuilding teams this year but even if they do well, I don't think that necessarly makes them more worthy than a team that has more money than them. It means they got luckly with their AAA and AA prospects and added small money guys that don't necessarly put up dazzling numbers but can get the job done when you need them too.

What I hate is that pitcher with the Jerry Curl!

What's up with that?

I didn't think people still had that hair style. I mean come on, if you want to be different fine. But a Jerry Curl?

Oh yeah, Raiders fans suck, and post 1990 Cowboys fans.

Cowboys fan - "My team rules, Super bowl champions, Woooo!"

Me - "Hey man, who quarterbacked them to the Superbowl in the 70s?"

Cowboys fan - "They went to the superbowl in the 70s? GOOOOOOOOOOOO Cowboys"

Yankees payroll: $185M
Red Sox payroll: $135M
Indians, Pirates, Devil Rays, Brewers payroll combined: $125

Tiny payroll my ass.

The Cards, Astros, Twins, A's, Dodgers, and Braves would have earned it.
Between those 6 teams: 4 free agent signees over 5 M on their roster.
Yankees:4 free agent signees over 5 M.
Boston:4 free agent signees over 8 M.

I'm not saying New York didn't buy their team, I'm just saying Boston did, too.

Derek Lowe statistics past 2 seasons combined:
ERA W L
4.92 31 19

Opposing batters hit .299 against him this year.

Maybe you should educate yourself before posting.

Loaiza makes 4M, the player they traded for him, Jose Contrares makes 9M. They lowered their payroll 5M when they got Loaiza.

The Red Sox are better because the team has more comradery.

1. Pedro is not the second biggest contract.

2. No one wanted Ortiz, thats why they have him with such a cheap contract.

3. Jeter, Rivera, and Williams stayed where they are because they are paid a lot of money.

4. Manny, and underacheiver?

5. Last time I checked Oakland (Damon was on the A's before he was a free agent) was not a small market team. They are in the San Fransico area, one of the wealthiest parts of the country.

6. I never knew Cabrera was a star.

7. Foulke came from Chicago, hardly a small market, if you ask me.

You are dead wrong about most things. Salaries never went up until free agencies began with the formation of the MLBPA.

1.Is a 3.90 ERA worth 17.5 Mil?

2. Actually, the Yankees wanted Ortiz in the 2002 offseason. Since they already had Jason Giambi and Nick Johnson, it didn't seem like much sense then. Besides, Ortiz wasn't a fully developed slugger until the all-star break last year.

3. Jeter, WIlliams, and Rivera stayed in NY because they're happy there! Nobody leaves a consistent winner with the best manager in the majors!

4. Manny is quite the underachiever. He made errors on 2 CONSECUTIVE plays in game 1 of the world series. He also made a baserunning gaffe by being thrown out at third to end the inning in game 3 of the ALCS(big no-no).

5. Oakland is not as affluent as San Francisco. The A's payroll was $60M in 2004, not big at all for a perennial playoff contender. Their average attendance was only about 24,000. You call that big market?

6. I did. :D
