This is an inherently relativistic question. Cool is a relative term, with fairly subjective standards on its valuation. In general, it is a term of attraction. Therefore, the coolest national flag is the one you are most attracted to, whose symbolism and meaning you most strongly associate with. For instance, I consider the US flag, followed by the Texas flag, to be the coolest flags out there, because I am a citizen of that country and state.

Or we could say that all we're looking for is standards of aesthetics. In which case I'd vote for any flag without words or images, because a flag which gets its meaning across without using those is aesthetically superior to one that cannot.

That's why I don't like any Scandinavian flags (all have a cross in their flag).
Japan and Macedonia are my favourites. Both simple and meaningful.

Well it's a Christian cross and I'm not Christian. No religious symbols in the flags, please. Especially when you have the freedom to believe what ever you want.
Colors and things, hmm, let me think...no, Libya's would be my third choice. Less is more... :D

The Seychelles! The Free People of Preebles sue it as their national flag.

And I'll be a national chauvinist and say South Africa. But it really is a cool flag! Meaningful too.

Am I right in thinking you don't like flags with crosses because you're not Christian? I'm not christian, and I don't have any problem with my country's flag (I'm Norwegian.) Neither have I heard of any of my countrymen having a problem with it.

Anyway, the symbolism of it is not so much christian as it is a mark of fellowship between the scandinavian countries. The Danes were the first to use the sideway cross, I think. According to legend, it fell out of the heavens during a battle some time in the eight century, and it's been used by the Danes ever since. In fact, I think the Danes were the first in history to use a flag. -Flag as in flag, that is. Not as in banner or symbol identifying a particular civilization, of course. Yes, it has its basis in religion, obviously, but after more than a millennium, there is more meaning in it that that. A meaning which even sworn atheists or hindus can understand and appreciate.

I don't believe this!

Soon someone's gonna start a poll "Which country has the greenest grass?" or "Which country produces the smelliest shit?"

STOP IT!

could you please start your own thread for these questions? this one for discussions about flags and not grass or shit.

and anyway, you shouldnt use drugs. drugs are bad, if you really have to use nikotin and koffein, but hands away from grass and shit ok? :(

Naah, it's not a problem for me either. But they are still not my favourite flags if you think about the issue purely as an (a)esthetic question.
But thanks for the information. Always nice to learn something new.

The coolest flag on NS? I think mine is pretty cool. In fact I have my own region for countries with cool flags, but since I haven't advertised it (and I've password-protected it :D ) nobody has joined it :p
