A long post, or perhaps...A book?

I've been kicking around this idea in my head for some time, considering, mulling it over, procrastinating.

Long story short; I've got a book idea...or perhaps its not worthy of anything more than a long post that few will read.

I've got about 13 copies of the Art of War, I've studied the book and done research papers on it. I've tracked its use in wars both in and outside of China. I used it frequently in my undergrad thesis. It and the various companion and expansionary texts of ancient China are my bathroom read, on my nightstand, and in my daily thoughts. Yeah, I'm F***ed up.

In short: I know waaaay too much about the Art of War, though I firmly deny being anything resembling an expert on it.

I also have a deep and profound dislike for the policies of Donald Rumsfeld. As those few ill-fated enough to read my massive diatribes against his work know, I stand strongly against his "innovations" for the US military.

So here's the scoop; I want to target the policies, not the man. And because my aim is business and not politics, I hesitate to act now, so near the election. However, I have in my head the idea to go though the Art of War line by line and show to the world just how his policies contravene the most basic principles of war contained therein.

I want to take all thirteen chapters and array the facts against him. I wish to utterly discredit his policies and destory the notion that his tenure has been anything other than a near-fatal disaster for the US military.

So my question to you, General forum, is this...should I bother? Do you have any interest in such a thing at all? Or should I just write it for myself and save it on my hardrive next to the crappy poetry and MS paint disasters?

Is that Sun Tzu?

Uh, yeah. I've also got my "namesake's" Art of War, but its long winded and obsessed with middling details; though it shares many of the themes of Sun-Tzu's Art of War on close examination, I doubt many have heard of or would be interested in Niccolo's take on warfare.

I'd love to see that.

I think that a Machiavelli comparison would be... unusual, to say the least. One quote as an example: "In fact, destroying cities is the only certain way of holding them"

I rest my case.

As much as I disrespect him, he seems to be the only one with any plans.

write it up, post it on a blog and link us to it. worst that will happen is that you will have a post with 0 replies and a blog with not visitors. same as if you just leave it on your hard drive. if you do a good job im sure someone will read it.

if you are going to be an "expert" on sun tzu i hope you have taken the time to learn to say his name correctly its not sun zoo its shoohn dz (shortish U in sun, no vowel sound at the end of tzu). emphasis on the SUN.

I say do it.

If you want to write, then any practice is good practice. If you want to be a diarist or essayist, this would make an interesting portfolio piece.

If you just think that Donald Rumsfeld is so incompetent that he couldn't get laid in a brothel, you might as well prove it to the world... I mean, they might not care... or you might find yourself on 60 Minutes.

Okay, I'll do it. I've roughed out chapters 1-3, which I now need to back up with source citations (I really wish I didn't throw out all my old Economists and such...).

I think it'll take quite some time to do (well, to do correctly). But perhaps if I get a couple of chapters finalized I'll post 'em next week or so.

It's a good idea, but I would check the TOS etc. first to make sure that Jolt doesn't end up owning the copyright or something daft. Just a thought (and a gloomy one unfortunately :( )

Here's hoping that they DON'T have some weird copyright on posted material... I shouldn't think they do, since most site DISCLAIM responsibility for any content, so it's hard to see how they could then CLAIM responsibility...

But, if they do... post a notice somewhere, and those of us that are interested will assault you from all sides with petitions to be able to see it OFFSITE somewhere. (Email maybe...)

Can we get a Mod's opinion on this? Can I post material here and still retain copy rights? Mods?
