There are fewer posters, and less frequent posts.

When did this trend start? I wonder if it had anything to do with the great purge of the General Forum?

It might just be the time of day. Sometimes two or three pages have active threads, other times there are only about 5.

Everyone goes through this, I did after the Jolt move. I didn't play for weeks, only signing on to keep my nation alive, and never going to the forums. Then I got back to posting normally, and now I post more than I ever did. I'll probably go through another NS depression eventually, and then get back on, and repeat until I wait so long my nation gets deated from inactivitty and I don't care anymore.

It has been in decline for months

this new layout board is nowhere near as good as the old bb board

and the mods weeded out all the characters that made the general forum interesting

even some of the more controversial mods like neutered sputniks made the forum fun and interesting, now it is but a shadow of its former glory

characters that I can remember are

Parratoga - A national socialist nazi who was both hated and loved in equal measure on here

Kitsylvania - A spammer who was well respected by the community

Marathon - Loathed and loved in equal measure, controversial and scathing

Beeker - Ladies man and anti nazi

Demoness - Role playing legend in the nationstates forum

Mezzaluna - Great player, loved by all

Demented Oppression - forum flirt

Blackvain - the first virtual nightclub owner and the best

I like all you people pining for the good ol' days that weren't even around last summer. Those were the good ol' days.

They killed Demented Opression? Guess I've been out of it or something...

You know, we're going to look back on these days in a few months and say "Hey, you guys remember the good old days? You know, like in October."

(1) jolt, with its bland look and fewer toys, and

(2) grim moderators who can't stand a little fun.

The NS high points for me were probably early summer and autumn '03...There hasn't been much for me to do since December last year. People tend to run away when I open my mouth (IC and OOC), and I'm not interested in joining Conservatopia's government. I also think there had been a huge change in RP quality that lasted for several months this year, but it seems to be getting back to normal.
NS sure was interesting when Magic China was around. :D

Once I sent a TG to one the nations claiming to be him and he claimed to have never heard of a certain other nation who said he was MC.

The new board definately killed NS for me -

Even through all the timeouts and 503s I still used to post loads, and cut my war-RP teeth there. There was a real community atmosphere and there were a lot of real characters. Then I think a lot of casual, middle-of-the-road users dropped out during the forum transferrence, meaning most of the people who carried on were the real old-school and the newbies - I'm not sure how many people like me made the transition - and those who did come across started posting a lot less, as the whole community struggled to get used to it's new surroundings. The dull look of the forums hasn't helped either.

Maybe if we all donated a few dollars/pounds/euros to Max he'd be willing to use it to rent a nice open server with plenty of bandwidth and transfer the old forums back. Sure, it would cost a little, but I'd be willing to pay a little to get a little of the old board's 'feel' back. Something very close to the core of NS died when the old forums were switched off, there's no doubt about it.

I'd add the formatting of replies to extend beyond the immediate reply. One can lose the context when reading an ongoing exchange.

I think people are also burned out on the election. Let's see what happens after 11-02 or 02-11 for the Euros.

He's already made it clear that he has no intention of making this place a pay game. I'm sure that he'd take your money if you offered, but he's not going to do anything that would make the game reliant on user donations. NS2 will supposedly be a pay service.

Yeah, but if people gave money and the site was improved, it would require people to be that generous forever more. If those kind people suddenly couldn't donate the money, Max wouldn't have any way to pay to keep all the upgrades. He's already made it clear that he won't make this site dependent on player donations. It's a good idea, but it's already been debated and decided on.
