Drink to him. He was the greatest DJ ever, and he died in the early hours of this morning. He will be desperately missed, not just because he was unique in lasting in rock radio for 37 years, not because his voice was perfect, not just because he was radio through and through, not just beause he broke more new bands - from Pink Floyd, New Order, the Fall, and the Sex Pistols, the Class, Crass, Stiff Little Fingers, Siouxie and the Banshees, Pulp, and too many to mention - but because he was one of a kind. He'd play reggae followed by an obscure 1930s jazz record followed by an underground poet, followed by punk. He taught more than one generation to open their ears and listen and find joy in music of all kinds.
Without him the world is heavier and greyer.
God, that'll be a great gig in heaven, with John DJ-ing, and Kurt Cobain and Marc Bolan jamming.
Drink to him.

And, while you're drinking, send out thioughts of sympathy to his wife and family, who will be devastated at his sudden and unexpected death.

I found out today at the end of my world politics lecture - our tutor told the whole hall and then ended the lecture by playing out one of his songs - was a really cool send off I thought. I'd better wait until I finish my essay before I drink to him though.
