I was just about to start this thread. This was such a shock. He was one of the best DJs I've heard. Rest in peace.

Me too. Not just a great music DJ from back when such things were rarer than hens' teeth in the UK, but also a great general radio presenter who was just getting into his stride. This is sad news.

I know what you mean, i stayed up late just to listen to his show on a tiny old portable radio, listening to it really quietly so i wouldn't wake my parents...the only reason i joined my uni radio station was to play loads of different and wierd stuff like him...just to try and emulate the man...its not gonna be the same without him :( used to listen to his show on radio 4 too, just because the people on it were nuts but actually liked em

Oh my God. I didn't realise.

I didn't even think he was that old.

What I liked about his show was the fact that he was Radio 1s longest running DJ, and still seemed to have prablems with the equipment.

Sad yes.. but he did play some of the most awful tripe ever to be heard over the waves in amongst the good music

What an absolute shocker. I can't believe it. May the great man rest in peace.

may he rest in peace, great dj, great personality and totally unprejudiced about music, wouldn't say anything bad about a band until he'd heard them.

He was only 65...

If he was born in 1939, that makes him 75, not 65.

RIP.

A legend has indeed gone...what a complete shock. I can't believe we'll never hear him on the radio again - I grew up with Peel on the Evening Session and even met him once at one of his Peel Sessions gigs (Gene and The Bluetones). I think I speak for many when I say that he was the coolest man around.
